AC Cutting Out

This is on a 2004 EB Expedition.

Here is the deal. After driving for about 3 hours (in 95-100+ degree heat) the AC "turns itself down". No matter what speed the AC is on it barely puts out any air for at least 30 minutes. This has happened on two different occasions. The air is still ice cold and otherwise works perfect. Like I said this has happened twice now about 2 months apart on the same long drive in nearly the same location. Is there something that "times out" the AC in this manner? This can't be normal.

Assuming you have automatic temperature controls, What is the temperature setting and was the desired temperature achived? Automatic temperature controls usually work full force in automatic and gradually backs down as it approaches the dialed in temperature setting.

The sun load sensor may be bad.

I do have automatic temp controls, but it was nowhere near the desired 65* inside (it was 104* outside). I can actually feel the temperature start to rise inside when this happens. Even if I take it off of auto and manually put the blower on high it still blows like it is on low.

hkiefus,

What and where is the sun load sensor? What does it do?

Okay,

I just looked it up on Alldat.com and found a TSB.

Here is what it said.

ISSUE

Some 2003-2004 Expedition/Navigator vehicles built before 03/16/2004 may exhibit an intermittent loss of cooling (temperature swings) or diminished register airflow from the A/C system during highway drives. Diminished airflow on drives of 30 minutes or more may be due to ice formation on the evaporator core. This condition is exhibited in hot and humid climates only. Temperature swings with strong register airflow may be due to unwanted cycling of the thermostatic switch. This condition occurs only when the rear climate control system is not present or turned off.

ACTION

To service, install an evaporator assembly-mounted thermostatic cycling switch and disable the TXV-mounted thermostatic switch, using service Kit 4L1Z-19E992-M. For vehicles built on or after August 2003, it is also necessary to order and install fastener W701696-S301. For installation procedures refer to the Service Kit instruction sheet.

My 03 did it last Sunday too. It was 102 degrees while on the road (towing the travel trailer) kids were complaining they were too cold in the back so I turned the rear air off. Luckily we needed gas and I pulled over, turned on the rear air to help cool off the interior and it unthawed itself.

Man it would have been uncomfortable without decent AC!

I don't think so. I think only recalls are fixed free if you are out of the 3/36 warranty period.

I haven't fixed mine yet and haven't had time to even mess with it.

Thanks for this forum. My 2003 Expy has done this twice on our last two trips. 100+ degree weather. Thanks for posting the TSB. Scheduling appointment next week. Also, adustable pedals no longer adjust. Having that fixed as well.
