Hi all, I'm new here. I recently purchased a 99 f350sd psd. I was towing a skid steer yesterday, first time i towed with it. I was highly dissapointed. Was about 8000 lbs. this is stock, i could eventually get speed up but it sure took a while, and died on relatively small hills and had it floored. it is an auto and it has 165000 miles and it was 100 degrees out. My ? is how is normal towing with these? btw. it runs real good, with no trailer when you get on it it'll put you back in the seat. ???? Todd

Todd...First Welcome to FTE!! I tow more than you did on a fairly regular basis with more weight than you were pulling and I would have to say that this is not normal UNLESS you are talking some real serious grades (>8 percent). I pull the Sierra Nevada (from 600 ft to 7200 feet in 40 miles) with 5000 pound camper regularly without the truck ever coming out of OD at 65 mph (at 100 degrees in the valley). I once pulled the Front Range with my 20' trailer and show car inside and went through Eisenhower Tunnel (11,000') in 3rd gear.

Do you have gauges? If you could share boost readings, EGT's it would help in the search for an answer. If you are going to haul stuff get at least a boost, EGT, and tranny temp gauge...cheap preventative medicine.

I can't explain why your truck seems to run fine without a load...I know when I am towing above 5000 pounds my truck is no head-snapper, but it pulls hills like a gorilla!

Lots of reasons for low power, to name a few:
Dirty fuel filter
Weak fuel pump
Leaky turbo boots
Dirty air filter
Wore out oil
Lot's of other stuff can cause your symptoms but this is the easy things to start with.
First thing you need to do with your new truck is to get all of the fluids changed, filters changed, tighten up everything and then get a minimum of three extra gauges installed if you really want to keep up on what's happening with your rig as your going down the road.
These would be, Pyro, Boost, Tranny Temp.
Good luck with; your new truck.

i only recommend Autometers because i have them and love them. eventually getting 4 more. DiProcol also makes gauges. Spa...? makes digital gauges that are dual function and pricey.

I suggest the Isspro EV's they are a higher quality and they match the factory units perfectly, go to www.kensperformancesolutions.com, tell Ken NCHornet said hello. Ken sells all three gauges and complete install kit with Apillar for under $300 delivered.
You also need to tell us as much as you can about your truck, intake, exhaust, chips or tuners, anything other than stock. I would check your boots, my hose clamps were really loose and you can loose boost real easy and your truck will fall on it's face under a load, could also be a dirty air or fuel filter, good advice to change all fluids and filters and go from there.

Due to the mileage, I'm leaning towards the fuel filter (it's a great idea to do the full service on it regardless). I gained 1.5 MPG's when I changed my filter out. these are fairly basic engines, the more air/fuel that goes in = the more power out (don't have to worry about sparkplug timing). So as long as the air is flowing then it's down to fuel pressure/volume.

I'm thinking lack of boost. Unless you drive it with full boost, it may seem strong when unhooked from trailer just to puke out with a load. Check all of you boots for tightness and leaks.

I agree with zx250, sounds like a boost leak. The first thing I did when I bought my mule was change every filter and fluid that could be changed.

Man that does suck. I wish you the best of luck in finding another job. Like Strokin said, hang on to it(truck) as long as you can and maybe something good will come along. In any case, hang around the boards stay in touch.
