Hi tsutt; I have to say what you posted is de'javue all over again. I pull a 36', 10k t/tlr and my tow vehicle was a 1985 E-150 that my wife and I rebuilt and replaced the 351 with a 460. Great tow vehicle but it got about 4 mpg while towing; not much better solo. I listened to all the hype about power and fuel economy with p.strokes and in Sep. '98, ordered an E-350 super duty diesel; took delivery in Dec. '98. I hooked up and headed to Wyoming the following July and everything on the road passed me. Max speed was about 65 mph, but with a 5 mile straight stretch, I could get it up to about 70 with pedal shoved through the floor; forget about passing on a 2 lane road. Mountains? Forget about it. I looked out at one point and a 3 legged dog and an old man on a cane was walking past me. Fuel economy? about 5 - 6 mpg with a tail wind. When I returned, I took it to the Ford garage and they said everything checked out with no problems and told me not to believe all the people that said they got 15 - 20 mpg. I installed a Superchip, a couple of K&N's, and use a fuel additive which got the mpg up to ~8 mpg towing and ~13 empty. What you quoted is exactly how my van performed before the chip. You may have to live with what you have.
