I was driving down the road in San Antonio and I noticed my dash lights being a little dimmer then usual and then my ABS light came on. So like a dumb *** I was at a light less then a mile from my house with a few friends of mine and I killed the engine and attempted to restart it. It was dead. NO one in texas has any hospitality what so ever. I tried to jump myself and that failed. I had a buddy come over for a jump as I waited stranded in the most busiest intersection in town. I returned home and tested my batteries which read 11 volts and I left my lights and A/C on then after a couple of minutes the truck started to shut down my lights, stereo, etc. I am going to run diagnose my alternator tomorrow morning. Wish me luck. Has anyone put a larger alternator on their 7.3? If so, which or how big did you go.
I can't imagine the need of a larger amp alternator but I do suggest using a new, not rebuilt. I went for the rebuilt and it did not make it 2 years. Learned the same old lesson again. buy cheap, buy often.
