the computers hardly ever go out on our trucks.

now the cps(cam position sensor) on the other hand those go out quite often. signs are your truck will just die randomly on you or wont run at all.

does the cps have a square plug and is it between the crank and waterpump pulley?

sort of. the cps is located at about a 10 o'clock location on the crank pulley. it has a hold down bracket that looks like it could be a pointer for timing marks on the crank dampner

My '96 has started to do the same thing. Stop to make turn etc, the truck dies but starts right back up. Sometimes after engine starts it wont rev up and sputters. Almost sounds like when a motor hits a rev limiter. Trun off and start up again and all is fine. I have replaced the air and fuel filter and bought fresh diesel. I have a new CPS so I guess that is next.

Yeah, CPS is common and also if you have a chip in the PCM check the contacts and make sure everything is clean and tight. I had to change the CPS in my 97 F350 at about 115K miles because of intermitant signal.

Log onto ebay, go to setup an account. Set it up. Go to advanced search, go to ebay motors catagory. Click on parts, type in CPS. With the account you can bid and pay for it yourself.

I have found a couple on ebay but if it is easier for you, International carries the same part for a lot less money than what a ford dealer wants for it. Here are some ebay links to CPS sensors, just click on them.
