78 f350 w/ 351m c6, im starting to get the hint, that my timing is off, sometimes, it will diesel, and not start cold at all, and theres others but i cant remember them now, but anyway i loosened the 9/16 bolt that holds the distributor down, and went to advance it a hare, and it wouldnt move period. i cleaned the dirt out around it, and tapped on the base with a hamer, and nothing, so i soaked the area with liquid wrench, andits been sitting in the puddle for 3 days now and i go tap on it every once in a while, and earlier i went to see if it would crack and its still stuck as bad, i was wondering how the hell am i gona move this thing any help will do
I don't think I can help, but the same thing happened on my 77 F250 with a 400. Basically the same engine. I wonder how many others have had the same problem.
I've had a couple of Ford dizzy's do this to me. A 400 and a 300 I-6. I sold the pickup with the 400 the way it was. And the 6 cyl is still has the distributor in it, even after trying to beat it loose with a 4 lb sledge. Ended up using another dist when I swapped engines.
Cast aluminum and cast iron don't like each other. Nothing unusual to have this happen, and there is no easy solution to fix it that I know of. I never had one stick to the point it never came out, but I've had a few that I just had to keep working at until I could pry or turn it loose.
hope i can help .i had the same problem but on a 89 bronco. that distributor had a shape to put a wrench on it a little hard to get to but it did the trick.
I've recently had to give my 400m engine a tune-up and had to replace my distributor. I sprayed the crap out of it (old one) with PB Penetrating CATALYST on and let it sit for a day then I tapped it lightly with a hammer and with a little aggressive twist (with gloves on) the unit broke loose and I almost creamed my shorts.
$8 dollares a can but well worth it.
good luck!

what if i used a mapp gas torch to maby break the seal will that damage any of the electronics in the dizzy??
ooof, I don't know what mapp gas torch is but all I can say is that heat and aluminum are eachother worst enemies. distributor would expend in the hole or worst yet the aluminum would melt if not careful. Be patient!
The heat would have to be directed on the cast around the dizzy hole to do any good whatsoever.
Heating aluminium would only expand it... where it needs to be smaller than the cast iron hole.
Just keeping spraying penetrating fluid & tapping on the it with a rubber or wooden mallet.
4 days soaking in 30 weight oil for me...Still no go....
My friend has done this by tapping and prying upwards with a 2x4 as well. After he sprayed it with PB penetrate.
I feel your frustation. I can't help but to LOL. sorry man
it'll come loose!
and when it does you let us know and we'll throw a web party.
