I hate to get an argument going but in an 01 the tranny oil is circulated through a radiator cooler at the bottomof the radiator. I've had mine apart and if a tranny line broke or was leaking it could have transmission fluid in the radiator and possibly water in the tranny. The lines then come out of the radiator and circulate through the factory transmission oil cooler before going back to the transmission.
This is standard cooling on an 01. There are lots of references on this forum to the transmission lines going through a radiator cooler and a couple of discussions about whether to bypass the radiator cooler or not. Anyway, not trying to argue but it is possible that there is transmission fluid in the coolant.
Back to the original question, I would look for another truck altogether. No sense starting on this note. If you have your heart set on this one, or just can't pass this deal up, I would definately have them warranty the truck to cover this situation.
I think kennedyford has this one right. The oil cooler is bad. I have changed lots of oil coolers gone bad on semi-trucks and cat equipment. We would change the oil cooler and then after draining cooling system fill the cooling sys with water and some cascade dishwashing soap (no suds I guess). Run engine at normal operating temp for little while then drain by pulling bottom hose off. Repeat untill You think all the oil is out of cooling system.
Thanks for the note. I picked up the truck today. They changed the oil cooler and "flushed " out the cooling system. When i got home, i looked at the coolant jug on the top of the radiator and it was black! I guess there's still oil in the system. Should i Try your method? It sounds good! If i get this right, first drain the coolant via the lower hose, then fill with water, add alittle cascade, then run the truck for some miles? Should i then drain it again via the lower hose? Should i wait for it to cool first or will waiting make the oil separate from the suddsy's? I appreciate you knowledge in this. Thanks, Jeff
UMMMMM, if its that black without floating oil spots, there may be an issue. Way alot of oil....bad....Drain, check oil level and such. Just run water, oil wont hurt anything
I flushed the system with dishwasher soap three times until it was sorta clear. It was black spots in green with the first drain. It got clearer every other flush. I also changed the oil and filter. Now, another question, when i went to start it this morning, it wouldn't start. On the third try, it fired. I then moved it to a spot to change the fluids and when i tried to start it again to circulate the water, no start! The batteries were starting to draw down so i quit and put one at a time on a charger. The first battery registered 25 amps charge as soon as i hooked up the clamps! The other one only registered about 6 amps. After charging, the engine took right off. I accidently left the two map lights on last night. Does a diesel start hard when not turning over fast enough? I'm SLOWLY learning this and that about these critters! I thought it was turning over plenty fast the first time i tried, but it turns over alot faster with charged batteries. It also starts everytime i try. Could i need new batteries? Thanks, Jeff
