Plan to clean my EGR but have one question for guys that have done it. Can you use the old gasket and if not can you purchase the gasket from Ford separately?
Thanks for the info Mike. Being retired I have the time to be careful but sometimes things happen and just wanted to know if Ford sells just the gasket. Thanks again.
Taztruck: Great info.Plan to stop by my friendly Ford dealer and get the gasket & o-rings just in case I need a gasket. Think I spend more time at the dealer than on the road. Still like the truck, Ford is the only way to go. Thanks.
Definately GET THE GASKETS.... I destroyed the upper removing it for cleaning tonight.. Plus the o-rings kind of stuck to it as well...
I removed mine for the first time tonight...2k4 50,000 miles... I towed this past week and got a p0404 plus I had some bucking happening when I would go up a grade or just lightly accelerate...It came with black smoke as well.. During the trip at each fill up I would put PS gray bottle cetane booster in...I kept FLOGGING the thing to blast it out.. I stopped cleared codes and the truck eran flawless...But Just to be safe I stopped off and got some gaskets when returning home.. I pulled the EGR(WILL POST pics later) It was NASTY,..seemed to have quite a bit of buildup...Not Excessive..But enough to inhibit flow..>>Id say just slightly more than Ive seen on comparable gassers...
After cleaning it up with carb cleaner...drying it off cleaning the hole as best as I could, I reinstalled it...fired the truck up... It stumbled just for a second then idled fine.. I took the truck and ran it through the paces with a load... No codes and no more bucking... Ill definately add this to the 10K mile checkup..
Also on a side note.. It appeared when removing it that maybe I had a BUNK top gasket.. it looked as if soot escaped from the top at some point...there was a black path where the top gasket was...almost like the gasket was cracked...
I had all the other updates/recalls done.. BUT when I would bring my truck into the dealers for the P0404 they told me it was nothing.. Im a shadetree mechanic anyway and as Ive found many many times.. If you want it fixed right...do it yourself..
oh and on the removal...the side of the body hangs over the manifold on both sides.. I used 2 small prybars...the just held the lip...With slight even pressure on both the valve just popped right out.. Not a mark on the sensor and it was easier than Ive read other methods as being...
