I finally pulled the plug on my '03's EGR. I thought from previous posts that it would give you one or two codes, P0404 I think is one, but not trigger the CEL. That was not the case since the CEL came on when I started the engine. I probably am wrong but I would like to check with the rest of you. Thanks for any comments.
well, i have an 04 f-350, i too tried the EGR diconnect and also had the cel come on. i read that it would throw 2 codes but no light. Hmmmmm, something isnt right. will it have to be cleared then the light stays out, or will it keep coming in?

i have 2005 and not recieved a cel yet. i have disconnected my egr recently. maybe after more miles it will. i did notice a surging idle after disconnect though. i was about to plug it back in went it seemed to resolve itself

All I can say was the cell came on immediately when I started the engine. I did pull the plug with the engine off. With the CEL on, if you clear the codes I bet the CEL will come right back if the EGR is still unpluged. Guess I will have to live with it on unless anyone else has some ideas. If they do, thanks in advance.
i dunno, i have heard of some models getting a cel while others do not. im not sure if maybe it only looks for the egr every so many miles or not but mine so far has not. as soon as it does if it does i'll post
Typically the '03 / '04 models did not activate the CEL unless the vehicle had California type emissions. Expanded somewhat for '05 as I recall and the '06 MY almost always lights her up.
My '04 has been free of the W.A.R.T. for the last 2 years & 28,000 miles...no CEL...or service issues for that matter.
I think you explained why the CEL came on. My '03 PSD does have the California Emission System. I purchased the truck in Maine while I was on vacation. Maine requires the Calif emission system. I live in NJ so I didn't think about the Calif emissions. Thanks for pointing that out to me kw5413 and thanks for the other replies, guys.
So if my truck is equipped with the california emissions then it will always throw codes and a cel associated with pulling the egr plug? If i do this and then clear them out will they come back because of my emissions system?

Is CA emissions software/flash and if so can I ask the dealer to remove the CA emission? I bought the truck in Maine but live in NJ which doesn't require CA emission. That way if the cel comes on I know there is something else wrong since non-CA emissions doesn't throw a cel.
I am sure there is but, you would likely have more MPG impact thru driving habits.
If there is more to CA emissions than programing...I would leave it alone. To many changes could cause a negative cascade effect creating the need for a dedicated bay, for your truck, at your local dealer.
Don't chase the rabbit to far down the hole...you might not be able to get out.

Good advice. Don't want to do anything if it's more than software. Have enough problems, don't want to create any new ones. Ford has caused enough problems on my Feb 03 built truck. Thanks again for the help.
I have a 01/2004 bought from Vermont. When I unplugged the EGR it threw a cel upon cranking. I followed the battery disconnect procedure and the CEL has not reappeared. That was 15,152 miles ago. Mike
