I was wondering ig there is any good way to inspect the tranny for wear/tear. I'd like to know what kind of shape its in. Any way to look at the clutch plates, etc.? Thanks
CANT REALLY LOOK AT THE CLUTCH PLATES, ONLY THING YOU CAN REALLY DO IS pull the pan and check your magnet in the pan to see how much gunk is on it, alsoinspect the fluid and transmiision filter for any metal filings not caught by the magnet.
Its safe to say you can have some silty looking mud on the magnet
TJ, I have noticed that my E4OD has certain shift characteristics. I was wondering if they were inherent to the tranny. It will bump around 45-50 mph and it shifts into OD I think too soon (around 35-40). Does this sound normal to you? Ron McCafferty

Over drive is about 35-40mph i think, My over drive kicks in at 70kph evertime, I'm a Canadian eh
The speed at which your Overdrive kicks in depends on your rear end. i have a 4.10 and OD shifts at about 35-37 mph. If you have a 3.55 OD will kick in around 42 mph.
ron that sounds pretty normal. i know on mine an many others 3rd and the converter locking are very close together like 3 mph apart at 35 to 40 then OD kicks in shortly after depending on how much throttle you are giving it. it also depends on your computer code. mines a tee5 other have slightly different shifts
All my trucks kick in about 35-40. If I slow down it might still be in at 30. We turn off the OD if we are towing or hauling around town. We still use it on the turnpike etc.

Ok, not that I'm any kind of expert in any mechanical matter. But I know many big trucking companies RELIGIOUSLY send in oil samples for all drive train fluids at EVERY change. I have no idea what labs do this or charge for these services, but if they can spot a potential problem before it becomes a major pain in my pocket book... it may be worth the $.
You can do a few clutch pack pressure leakage tests, it requires removing the valvebody though. I did that test on my 95 F250 and found that the overrunning clutch piston has a leaking seal. Ill wait till she blows and then gut it and make it bullet proof. Has your od light started blinking on and off yet? My overdrive kicks in at 37 mph if Im not on the throttle hard.
Actually for about $12 I can take an oil sample to our CAT dealer and they'll tell me all i need to know about the "wear levels", which i have been meaning to do. Also, The OD light did blink on me once, about a year ago, right after i installed the sonnax kit, so i had it checked and it was the "torque converter overheat" code. i uninstalled the sonnax and havent had a problem since.
