I have been wanting to convert my truck over to disc brakes instead of the drums that are on there. I have seen the articles and postings on changing to disc and was wanting to explore the option of setting my cab etc. on a newer frame. Has anyone on the list done this? If so what vehicle did you get the frame from? Any input would be helpful.
In selecting a frame, should you decide to go this route, determine how you will be using your truck. If you want to go with the independent suspension/ride characteristics associated with cars, I can only help by saying most people opt for changing the front clips to Mustang II, LTD etc… I’m not familiar with the 65 models so I don’t know if yours has the straight front axle, but if it does you might consider doing what I am doing with my 55.
If you’re simply upgrading the handling and braking and want to maintain the traditional truck like stance and feel then you might consider putting it on a 73-79 F-100 frame. I wanted to get rid of my straight axle set-up and even though I have read a few comments that were critical of the Twin I Beam suspension, I went with it because of my own personal experience and I know they drive much better than my 55. I used a 69 frame that I had on hand and completed the spindle swap to get the disc brakes. This step could be avoided by using the 73-79 frames. The 55 and 68-79s were the same frame width (34”), which lessons some of the problems, but it is still going to be a LOT of work.
Paul, The chassis are the same from just behind the cab to the front bumper from 65 to 79. In 73 the chassis behind the cab, and the rear axle was widened. You certainly can do this, not easy but very possiable.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
I have my 66 merc f100 on a 74 f150 frame. As John said the frames are the same from the back of the cab to the front end. In hind site and If I had a actual 66 frame I would not have done the swap. The box will need to be modified to fit on the new wider truck frame none off this is visable but it does add time to any work you are doing to your project. Also the rear axle sits futher back on the 74 frame so I had to move it ahead to fit the wheel well properly I hope this Helps Eric
