I have a stock 1951 F-1 and I'm thinking of a front brake upgrade.
Does anyone know for sure if there's a front disc conversion that will allow me to keep my stock 16" wheels? I want to be sure the calipers won't have any clearance issues.
I'm also thinking of adding a frame mounted brake booster. Any pointers on this guys? Is it unnecessary or would the discs pull up okay without one? I believe the master cylinder would need changing anyhow.
Sorry if this has been discussed here before. I have had a search around on this topic but couldn't find the exact information.
You shouldn't have a clearance problem with the wheels. You will need a new brake master cylinder. Disk brakes require a proportioning valve, especially if you run the stock drum brakes in the rear.
So it's worth going for the brake booster as well. I will be keeping the stock rear drums.
I have seen a fixed proportioning valve for 1948-56 disc/drum set up's. I'll buy one of those.
If your goal is to have power disc brakes, by all means get it all. I would highly advise buying a complete kit from one company so to make sure all of your parts match and are designed to work together for your application. Remember, the brakes are the most important part of any vehicle.
Bumped up this thread I started a while ago as I am just about ready to order some front disc brakes for my F-1.
I still an not 100% sure my stock 16" wheels will clear the calipers okay so if anyone has first hand experience of one of the kits working please jump in.
Many thanks.
I put 11 &5/8 brakes on my front end with the 5 on 5.5 wheel pattern. The stock wheels don't clear the calipers. The rivets hit, just enough so the wheels won't turn. If you stay with brakes slightly smaller than the 11&5/8 you'll be OK.
The supplier said that some guys grind the caliper down for clearance, but I wouldn't do that.
I got my front end conversion from Speed way And all I can say is I'm very happy. I didn't even have to drill out new grease zerks on the kingpins. ( some applications require that they be moved.)....every thing went on like they said.
old-dan, I've heard that before. I'll ask around for a smaller rotor, I know Performance On Line's 5x5-1/2 kit only have 12" rotors.
Mervy49, so the Speedway kit works! Their kit is on back order at the moment but just to check you have the stock 16" F-1 wheels and the calipers miss the wheels no problem?

I'm using 15" magnesium wheels and there is clearance. I put the wheels on and the spun them around with no clearance issues. http://i822.photobucket.com/albums/z...sinstalled.jpg
Those 15" magnesium wheels no doubt have a larger offset. Are you still on 5x5-1/2 lugs? If so do you have an old stock 16" wheel to try on for clearance?
Sorry to ask so many questions guys but I'm in London England so no chance to return anything that doesn't fit.
