I was told that I could clean and scrape any loose stuff off the bottom of the floor pan and then spray it with rubberized undercoating in a rattle can. That this would hold up to the Minnesota winters no problem. This is on a daily driver.
3M is the best brand of RUC out there. Get yourself a CLEAN (preferrable new) wire brush and remove anything that is there now. The cleaner (and rougher) the surface that you are applying upon the better. 3 years might be a little optimistic. But you should get at least a good year of protection, maybe 2. An added advantage is that it is a super soundproofer.
It will be a lot of prep work to get it to stay well. I sprayed some on my fenders, axle and driveshaft for looks. its stayin, but i am going to scrape it off and paint it. Rustoleum (oils) paints have done good for me. Painted my boat trailer with the white and its stayed on for about 4 years so far. I dont use it during the winter though..
Find out how much Line-X would be. Cant go wrong there, should be a warranty on it too...
Line-X is only warranted if it is applied as a bedliner, all other applications void the warranty. I was gonna Line-X but all the stuff under the vehicle would be in the way right? If I clean the underside and apply 3M RUC after the 2-3 years can I just spray more on or do I have to completely strip and re-apply?
a kid in town with the biggest chevy z71 did his under neath. I am not sure how he did it, but i would imagine it would be A LOT of prep work, but well worth it. The only problem you should have is it not sticking. If it sticks to sheet metal in the the bed, then why wouldnt it underneaath if prepped right? He didnt tape off all his shocks, wires etc etc so he got overspray. He did the rocker panels too...looks pretty nice for a chevy..sorry
My friend sprayed the inside of his trunk and floorpans on his project car with the 3M stuff. It sprays out black, not brown, and it holds really well. Like WillDog said, clean the surface really good and spray away.

Yes, you can re-apply without completely removing the first application. Just be sure you remove any loose places, etc, just like the initial application. The solvents contained in the product will allow the second/third/fourth applications to adhere adequately.
