Trans went in my 2001 7.3L DieselTruck!! With only 50 thousand miles on it. To say the very lest I am very unhappy with Ford. I will never buy other. I have always loved ford but after this no more. 4 months ago the water pump went out!! seams like one thing or other with this thing. Anyway very unhappy with product.
I had my front tranny seal go out 2 weeks ago, luckily I caught it before it burnt itself up. I also had my water pump go out 2 days after getting the seal fixed, all at 89000 miles. I still like my ford though, its just bad luck I guess. Just my 2 cents worth.
I suppose your correct when you say bad luck. Im just a bit more mad at ford for not standing behind an issue like this. I mean to say the truck has not even been drove hard, no pulling, of anykind. Pretty much been pampered it's whole life. Maybe that's the promblem.

Mine completely burnt itself up and I had to have a new one put in. As for what you should do: realize that this is a blessing (an expensive one though) in disguise, for the same money you would spend at the dealer getting a new tranny put in, you could get something thats a million times better. BTS, ATS, Suncoast or whoever you talk to can build a tranny that will stand up to any amount of power, weight, and dare I say abuse. Look into one, I guarantee you won't be sorry.
Uhh nevermind I see that Cangim beat me to it already.

Think of it this way, you have the 7.3 which seems to have a better track record as far as not being in the shop as often as the newer 6.0
The 4R100 seems to be very problematic compared to the newer Torqshift transmission is the 2005+ SD
I bought my 2002 last year, used and I bought an ESP ext FORD warranty
I drove the truck home and within 1 week the O/D light was flashing, I took it in and they replaced the TC and I got it back. Drove it a few miles and the OD light started flashing again, DAMN IT! I called them, returned to dealer, they rediagnosed it as having bad solenoids and I got a rental for a week and I had to just pay the intial $100 ded and a few buck for the upgrade car rental
I have since had NO issues with the truck
I am very happy with my 7.3 diesel, I have heard too many stories about the 6.0's being in the shop by Chicagoland SD owners
I def recomend going with BTS if you need a new tranny
Wow, that's a lot in a few weeks. Unfortunately the tranny going out in an 01 is not uncommon. Ford made the 01 with a mechanical diode that fails consistently. Any good transmission mechanic will replace it with a sprague gear and will beef up other parts of your transmission, too. Or, just bite the bullet on one of the transmissions recommended.
With a beefed up and reliable transmission you'll learn to love the power and torque in the 7.3. And know this, lots of us with 01 transmissions have felt your pain. Hang in there.
In my 2001 4R100, Ford used a Mechanical Diode which has failed in my truck from what I was told. What is this and what has Factory Tech done to eliminate it happening again?
The 2001 Models built for August 2000 to March 2001 are the ones with a mechanical diode, all other models have a 34 element sprag from the factory. All Monster Boxes, irregardless of year are built with the 45 element sprag assembly. A mechanical diode is one form of a one way clutch. When the E4OD came out in 1989, it had a sprag one way clutch on the top of the direct drum, and it worked great for 12 years. So Ford in 2001 changed it to the mechanical diode, which didn't work great and after literally 8 days, they realized it was not going to work. The only problem was that all the tooling for the original sprag was destroyed already and it took Ford 6 months to get new machines to go back to the way that they always were. The units built during those 6 months are the diode units. The diode has a different clutch plate pattern, different direct drum and an integral race. To replace one with a sprag, you need to replace all these parts. No Monster Box has ever been built with a mechanical diode.
What preventative messure can I take to avoid the trans goping south short of replacing the trans now?
Probably nothing. Just be prepared to change the trans. Yes, 4K for a BTS is steep but looking back today, it is worth every penny for a trans that shifts and performs like it should and not as the factory designed it to.
Depending on where you are, it is about 3900 for the trans itself. That includes a Precision Industries torque converter. I have had 2 and am pretty comfortable with them ($1000+). He sends you a trans in a box and you ship your core back to him. After that, you won't be buying an new trans anymore. Essentially, you have a lifetime warranty or so people on the board have been saying. He charges shipping for both ways so you have one bill and that is that.
