Wow, that's a lot in a few weeks. Unfortunately the tranny going out in an 01 is not uncommon. Ford made the 01 with a mechanical diode that fails consistently. Any good transmission mechanic will replace it with a sprague gear and will beef up other parts of your transmission, too. Or, just bite the bullet on one of the transmissions recommended.
With a beefed up and reliable transmission you'll learn to love the power and torque in the 7.3. And know this, lots of us with 01 transmissions have felt your pain. Hang in there.
Thanks for the support. Don't get me wrong I love the power the truck has. My thoughts are on this matter, ford had to have known that the trans would not hold up to the power the truck has. There engineers must have had no common sence on the day they said put it into production. I spent 3 hours on the phone with ford yesterday on this matter and gave them my thoughts. Than seen last night there new trucks come with a 5 year or 60k mile warranty on the power train. must be in need of sells???? Im not sure but I am very hot over this deal! But thanks guys for the support

203,000 miles on my stock 01 Tranny and I only flushed and changed the Fluid once (at 141,000). At that time (203,000) I dropped in a BTS just for the heck of it!! It looks like this guys truck sits a lot so that causes lots of problems.

You've been really lucky and that's great to hear. I personally blew the mechanical diode at aabout 60k miles. Had a local guy rebuild my tranny - triple lock TC, additional clutch packs, custom valve body, etc. and it's been great since.
Ford realized after 8 days of production that the diode was not going to make it but it took months to re-gear and go back to the sprague. So, lots of trucks in that era have had tranny's blow. Glad you're not one of them!
I understand your anger BUT no other manufacture is flawless either. I have had numerous friends with either Dodge or Chev have problems and not just little stuff. I had a Dodge "98" and had the engine fail after I brought to the dealer attention I had a oil issue and that was at 15,000 miles. Engine failed at 40,000 miles and the manufacture said to bad for you. I stuck 4000.00 into that P.O.S to sell it the next week after it was fixed!! So its ok to be mad but its not greener on the other side of the fence either.

My 2001 psd was built january 1st of 2001, according to the service records it overheated and would not shift at 17000 miles. It now has 70000 miles on one of those ford remanufactured transmissions. How do I tell if it has this mechanical diode. By the way it works fine as of now. thanks

I think the reman trans probably won't have the diode. Problem with production is that once you start it and get things going and then try stop it, it is very difficult. Kinda like stopping a train going already
Trans went in my 2001 7.3L DieselTruck!! With only 50 thousand miles on it. To say the very lest I am very unhappy with Ford. I will never buy other. I have always loved ford but after this no more. 4 months ago the water pump went out!! seams like one thing or other with this thing. Anyway very unhappy with product.
Hey, right back to your original post. My 01 has 46k on it currently. Driving daily, blah blah, yadda yadda, I'm lucky to put enough miles on it to change the oil in one year.
If that tranny poops out because it has that ridiculous diode, I'll be pissed too. Then I'll get a built one and move on. Gonna need to do that anyway before too long whether it craps the bed or not. Then that SOB should really last for a long time. Frankly I'm pretty much abusing mine right now with my TS chip until it does so I can tell the old lady I need a new one.
Anybody can build a lemon, but I'm very happy overall with this truck. Matter of fact, no Ford truck has ever left me stranded. I've had several.
