Code 628 "Slipping TC"

Search isn't working right now, so I thought I'd post this. I have a code 628. Has anyone had any luck changing the atf and filter to solve this code, or do I need a new TC?

you also need to drain torque convertor.

remove rubber plug from case under the tc, you need to tap starter to line up the drain bolt.

use a large drain pan.

also change filter and of course use a good quality atf.

Have you heard of anyone getting rid of the slipping condition by changing fluids? I sure hope it works, I will try your method of draining the TC.

Thanks,
Bill

the fluid breaks down over time.

you did not say if it looked burned.

nor did you say the trans was slipping, just that it set a code.

a fluid change is worth a chance.

The fluid is burned some and when the code is removed, the trans shifts smoothly (no slam shifting), but slips upshifting into 2nd.

You need to identify what you're working on: Year and which model transmission.

Also, you need to provide a COMPLETE list of observed symptoms.

If you don't already have $2,000 in the truck repair account, I think you should start saving as quickly as you can. Changing the fluid will slow the rate of damage but it can't repair the damage that has already occurred.

You really only have two long term choices, schedule it for a rebuild or wait until you get the last mile out of it and have to tow it to the shop. It is the price one pays for owning an automatic transmission and not changing the fluid more often than anyone would think one should.
