I was curious to know how much y'all got invested in your FEs. It sounds likes some of you on here have put more money in your FE, than say..... the wife's minivan?
Ya, I think between him and Greg, they have the market on cost/hp so far.
My race car motor cost me ~$7k to put together with most all new parts that time around: crank, rods, pistons, Ebok heads, rockers, cam, etc. The only think I HAD was the block.
I can't remember numbers that large, but I think it's 20-23k. Two words you want to avoid if you are on a budget are "billet" or "aluminum", especially when purchasing blocks, cranks, rods, etc...
By the way, I may be able to order my tranny within the next month. Woooohoooo!!!
It's not good to keep track of these kinds of things If I had to guess, I'd say I spent around $5k building my engine and I don't have anything radical at all...my engine computer sims at about 375 hp and 450 ft. lbs. of torque...I haven't spent the money to dyno it...I just know I'm happy with it when I drive it. I've taken down several ricers in a street drag...I love the look on their face when the ole Ford pulls away from them...LOL. FE parts aren't cheap...it's suprising how fast it can add up. I'm planning to get a 428 block and start to build it....there is no budget....I'll just buy parts as I can afford them. I don't want to know the total cost...ya know what they say....ignorance is bliss...LOL.
Well, my first build which blew up from my own mistake(forgot loctite on the cam bolt), about $3,000. Second build, got the whole donor truck for $500, re-used my top end pieces and bought new gaskets, so roundabout $600 when you add in oil and such. Third try, bought the engine in pieces(was going to be paid to assemble it, but my buddy's dad got rid of the '65 T-Bird it was bein built for) for $500, but somebody paid a pretty penny, probably close to $5,500 I'm thinkin, for a balanced crank, rods, pistons and a short fill in the cooling jackets for extra rigidity, all that jazz. I got an hour's enjoyment out of that one when it blew 'cause a valve keeper let go and it swallowed the valve on my way to work. Looked like somebody dropped a grenade in the cylinder and walked away. My newest engine I built then, had the original block(an X block)cleaned up, got new rings, bearings, cam & lifters, the basics. Somewhere in the ballpark of $800, so I've gotten off easy, 'cept for downtime, that is.

but you gotta remember, those two little words are cooooool!! my wife was reading this thread over my shoulder and suggested that anyone who is having problems with their wife and the money spent on the FE, bring up how much the wife spends on shoes, or purses, or manicures, or waxing, or that cute little dress she just had to have.... needless to say, i don't have a problem- she owes me!!!!
I think I had around 18 grand in the Engine Masters Challenge motor - - but I don't think you could duplicate it for that - - lotsa personal time and help from friends in that piece....
