ok i was going to start my truck (79 f250 w/400) and it turned over really slow so i turned key to off position and it kept turning over....not good battery cables got really hot , had to unhook groud cable to get it to stop i tried a different solenoid that i know is good because it works in a different truck....still does it whats going on here???
If the engine is turning over slow, there is a reason. If the engine is almost locked up, or the starter is bad, it can draw too much current through the starter relay(solenoid), and cause the contacts to weld together.
There have also been some problems with some parts stores solenoids hanging up when they are brand new. Getting a different brand usually solves that one.
the problem has kind of changed now it starts out turning over slow but after a second or two it's normal but it still doesnt stop with the turn of a key, could it be the ignition switch then, i'm sorry if i mislead u guys, and girls....its taking me for a ride too!!!
When it won't stop, pull the small wire off point #5 in the diagram above. If it then stops with the wire off, then it could be your ignition switch. If it keeps going with the #5 wire off, then the solenoid itself is sticking.
it stops after pulling that off(forgot to put that in last post) so is there any way of checking the ignition switch or is that a cross your fingers and hope thats it type deal?
The #5 wire is a pretty simple circuit. There is a main power wire feeding the ignition switch. Leaving the ignition switch is the red/blue wire. The red/blue wire gets power through the ignition switch only when the key is turned to the start position. So check and see if this wire has voltage all the time.
After it leaves the ignition switch, the blue red goes to the clutch pedal switch, or the neutral safety switch on the tranny. It then leaves that switch and goes directly to the #5 spot in the diagram above.
