I am starting to redo a 1955 F100 and need some help. I have the ownership and the VIN is 483101SK30xxxx. From what i've seen, it should start with an F. Does this mean the VIN was changed or something? My dad has owned it since early 60's and thats how its always been. There is no VIN tag on the door either. We are in Canada, would that matter?
Another question is i'm trying to find out what engine is in it, it is an 8 cylinder. Only numbers I can see is on the intake, which is EBV 9425 D. Also, theres no valve covers and the heads say 0609 in the middle. Where can I find the numbers on the block, and can you tell me anything about the above numbers? Thanks for all the help.
I can't tell you about any of your numbers but you do have a Flathead. The valves are in the block, (no need for valve covers) they are upside down to a new engine and open up into the head just beside the cylinder.
I would guess that maybe Ford made a Canadian Model. I think I read this somewhere. That could explain your problems with the numbers.
Try to do some more checking online.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.

It wasn't that the valve covers were never there like a flathead, but the valve covers are just off is what I meant. Its not a flathead. Thanks
483101SK30xxxx
It's a canadian vin but it should be like this though.
*1083SK30xxxx*
10 = F-100
83 = Pickup
S = 1955
K = Oakville Ontario
30xxxx = Consecutive truck built.
The 483 is the way its on the ownership. There is no VIN tags that I could find anywhere inside. I found one uin the engine compartment that said 483A and a couple other things, forgot to write them down.
Anyone else have any info about Canadian VINS? Is there a way to find out what engine and such came with it? If there are no VIN tags is there another way to find out?
Yikes, your getting all kinds of information.... some good, some not so good!
The engine is a 1955 239 ci. as that is what the EBV stands for. You can find these letters just above the oil filter on the block, but you will also find them on the intake manifold, as you did - the heads and various other parts of the engine. Look in one of the upper corners of the heads for the casting number - it too shuold be EBV.
As for finding parts (and I know becasue I too have a 239) it will be a little difficult and require some patience on your part. Be aware that Ford Flatheads are also 239 ci and certainly will not fit on your overhead value engine. Pull a search on e-bay for "239 Ford" and you will see a good mix of flathead parts and Overhead parts as well. I recently purchased vlaue covers, fuel pump and various other parts, but it does require you to visit the site frequently until you find what your looking for and its not a bad idea to stock up on a few parts when you find a good deal.
Most importantly, parts from a 272, 292 or 312 ci y-blocks will not interchange with your 239. Only parts from a 1954 or 1955 239 (the only two years that Ford produced these engines), and the majority of the parts from a 1955 256 ci engine will interchange with your engine. Note that 256 ci were also used in 1954 in Canada only.
Now that you know what engine you have (but do spend the time to varify the other casting numbers because intake manifolds are easily swapped out), your first purchase needs to be the 1954-55 shop manual. It will include information for the 239 and the 256 as well.
Good luck and drop me a note if you have any other questions.
The V.I.N. plate should be attached to the inside of the glove box door. As another member stated the first mark on the V.I.N. is an asterik. Then comes the Model, Body style, MFG. Plant, Model year, Serial consecutive numbers, Another asterik, Trim Code, Paint code, Trans Type, Rear Axle Ratio single or 2 speed.
The engines were 239, 256, and 272. I have a 964 Page 55-56 Ford Canadian Ford-Mercury Chassis and Body Manual here, if you need any further info let me know and I will try and help you out. One thing though be patient, as I do have other irons in the fire, hope this helps
