knocking noise

i was driving on the freeway whaen a loud knoking noise started in my 2001 7.3l engine. it proceded till i got off the freway, a couple hundred yards, then quit. it started making a hi pitched squeel in my turbo on the turbine side. this lasted about a min then ceased. i continued home and took the turbo apart. the turbine was severly damaged. i checked the glow plugs from the side it sounded like it was knocking, everything looked in order. also there was no damage to the compressor wheel. there is no miss fire, the engine runs smooth. however there is a deffinate loss of power.

anythought of what has happened.

also prior to problem i found excessive pooling of oil in intercooler hot side and compressor side of turbo.

any help would be greatly appr.

hey, welcome to the site. a few things to look at first. do you have a thermocouple for a gauge before the turbocharger? this may be the first case i've heard of one breaking off.... by you saying that it was severly damaged, exactly what happened to it? did it break off, did some vanes come off, or what? did the truck still run and idle fine aside from the turbo problems (of course no boost) maybe an injector tip broke off, and it got tangled up with a turbine blade to two?

the blades on the turbine where bent over and in someplaces broke off in 1/8 th inch increments fairly close to the inside of the wheel i am not sure if i have a thermocouple. but it idle and ran fine except i had no turbo spoolup untill 2000 rpms. wouldnt a injector tip broke of make it miss?

My guess would be - unless there is evidence of something hitting the compressor or turbine wheel - that your turbo was shot.

The oil you found in the compressor side - that's EXACTLY what I found when I pulled mine - along with some SERIOUS shaft play. (It wasn't too bad on the compressor side - but the play was very close to letting the turbine wheel contact the exhaust housing.) If there would be enough play to have either wheel hit the housing - at the speed these things spin = self destruct. I was lucky enough to find mine before something like that happened - but I had NO symptoms of anything being wrong, until I pulled the turbo off to fix a pedistal oil leak...

Well, the blades on the turbine and compressor wheels are bent by design. Are they all bent the same? Now broken vanes are a dead giveaway.

Can you post pics?
