need some help asap

I'm looking into buying a 2001 250 7.3L the problem is the truck I am looking at starts and runs but as soon as it tries to moves it falls flat on it's face. it idles really rough, the check engine light is on and it won't pick up the rpms very fast. Holding to the floor it takes about 30 seconds to a minute for it to rev up.Could someone tell me what they think might be wrong with it.

It only smokes when it revs up and when it does it is black like a diesel should be and it's about the normal amount of smoke that a diesel smokes.

my truck did the same thing after I blew the IC tube off. check the intercooler tubes and all the black and blue boots for splits and make sure all of the clamps are tightend to spec

Hmm... well that says that it's getting fuel.... lets see.

If the SES light is on - that means there are codes stored, that would most likely help identify the problem... That's definitely where I would start.

It's pretty tough to say - could be something as simple as the CPS.... or could be as serious as bad injectors, or even worse....

I would guess the EBPS needs cleaning see if you have a P0470 code.

to go along with what amiller said, have someone stand next to the exhaust pipe, out of the way of the smoke, and see if they can hear a hissing noise from the exhaust pipe.
