hi, i've recently purchaced a 66 f100 and it seems to idle fine. when i open the thottle it barely stays running and sometimes dies. but if i pump the accelerator quickly it will stay running-not well but enough to get moving. i've got the feeling it is probably the carb, but any help would be appreciated, thanks
I'll give you a few things to look for, but someone else will come on here and tell you something else. Open the hood, remove the air cleaner assy. First, make sure the choke plate is open. Next grab the Carb. by the air horn (where the air cleaner sits) and try to wiggle, or twist the top of the Carb. The one barrel carb. like to shake loose between the base and bowle. if this is loose, remove the carb. and tighten the 4 screws.
If this is tight, with the engine off, take a light and look down the inside of the carb. Move the throttle to wide open, and see if the acc. pump is pumping gas. This will give a place to start..
What engine and carb do you have? It is either really slow timing or a severely lean condition. If the accelerator pump isn't sqirting, then it will not rev very good. If you open the throttle slowly, and you get the rpm's up, will it stay there, or does it die. If it stay's there, check to make sure that gas squirts down the carb when you open the throttle(CHECK WITH ENGINE NOT RUNNING). If it does, then I would look into the timing to see where it is set. 10BTDC is a good starting point. Also make sure that your vacuum advance is working.
If no fuel squirts down the carb, stick a rebuild kit in it and it should be ok.
