i need a new dizzy but my engine is a 69 and my truck is a 76. so when i call up napa should i order a dizzy for a 69 or a 76
I would say a 69 cuz the fact that your truck is a different year i dont see how that affects the engine haha. Put it in a 2012 f250 ur not going to order a dizzy for a 2012 Id look up MSD as well. For a 69
Someone else will chime in soon
EDIT! Nevermind! Didnt catch the hole dura sprk thing. Musta been posted as i was typing. Im thinking you have points and switching to dura spark or something. REDROAD knows whats up
Well a 390 should be able to take any dizzy up to like 76 or whenever the cut off for the 390 is. But that being said yes they will come with points still i believe. Thats why most people upgrade the internals on a old points one or go with something like a MSD that you just install and drive! MSD is modern tech and not points to clarify if you dont know about MSD ignition. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...44442042,d.eWU
i all ready have electronic duraspark ignition that works so i dont want to change that. i guess i should try to explain my question better. the 69 engine came out of a car but now its in a truck so arent the dizzys insides different? like the springs and weights and how much it advances? napa is a 1 hour round trip for me so i just want to get the right part the first time i go.
I have a 410 from a 66 S-55 marauder in my 1975 F-100. I ordered a new distributor for a 75 Ford, mine is also a Duraspark. I figured best to keep all ignition components the same. I had the advance set up for the truck/cam/etc. Haven't fired it up yet but that's the route I went.
go with 76 if you have dura spark already .. If you have money to spend then there is better out there but for $60 and $45 for ajustable vaccum advance with springs for recurving your going to have better than they put on the motor in 69 and you already have had one apart to adjust it .. The only difference is between points and no points .. Points are one major pain and there's no reason to have them now .. Just make sure you carry a spare ignition module with you at all times
i got my new dizzy in and set the timing to 12 degrees but i couldnt get it to advance past 32 degrees even taking it up to 3500 rpms. i went on a test run and the motor seems to fall flat above 2000 rpms so i got home and took the dizzy plate off and saw it had a 10 and 15 slot and it was using the 10 slot. my old dizzy had a 13 and 18 slot and used the 13 slot. so i called napa thinking i got wrong dizzy but they double checked and said its right i cant run any more then 12 degrees base timing because the truck is hard to start when i tried to run more timing. i read that 390s like 36-38 degrees total and my truck did seem to run better with 38 degrees. how can i make up for the missing 6 degrees?? montana mentioned something about switching the slots around but i dont know how to do that. but even if i switched to the 15 slot i could only run 6-8 degrees base timing but at least id be back up to 38 total. i wish i had my old 13 slot back any ideas what i could do to get this timing back up to 38 degrees?
