western snow plow

I have an 06, F350, 4x4 PSD, manual tranny. I want to do some light comercial snow plowing, and am thinking of an 8 foot western pro plow with the ultra mount. Does anyone have any experience with this rig, and could you tell me if this is worth the 4,200.00 price tag? Thanks in advance, John

8' Western is a great plow, but $4200 seems like a lot of money. I only paid $3750 for mine last yeat in NJ

I would buy a 9' footer ! , I push a 9' Fisher MM, with my 06' F-350, and it does great !
I have never plowed with a Western,,almost purchased one,,but liked the Fisher truck mount better,,less complicated ! Next plow will be a 9' Fisher X-blade, stainless steel !

Thanks for the input FDF250. Where did you buy your plow? I live in Nyack, NY and would surely like to save 500.00.

I have an 8.5" ultra mount pro plus on my F250, I don't think you would want any smaller. I kind of wish I had gotten the 9', although I will likely put wings on it this winter. Because of the psd you may be limited to what blade you can install (weight) use Western's online tool to see what you can install. When I was shopping, there was not a lot of price difference between the pro & pro plus, you may want to consider that also.

Awesome plow and mount! I have the 8.5ft and think it is plenty big enough for the drives I do. If you are doing parking lots and big areas get the 9'. The price tag is hefty no matter how you look at it but this setup is so easy to mount and unmount it is well worth it.

Our local plow installer has nothing but good things to say about Western and having two older Western pro-plows, I'm very impressed. The dealer isn't near as charitable about Meyer and other brands and many appear to be built in a much lighter-duty fashion. This may not be a problem for casual plowing. My plows are 7'6", and I wouldn't get any smaller than that.

Plowsite.com is my #2 favorite forum (FTE is #1). You can also try http://Letstalksnow.com. BTW I also have an 06 F350 PSD and I will be having a 9'6'' Fisher ExtremeV Stainless Steel plow installed. I just like SS better for the long run-less painting to maintain. Western does make a good plow; they are owned by the same parent company as Fisher and Blizzard. A quality dealer can be worth a lot if you ever have a problem during a storm. If you do a search of these two forums you will come up with plenty of info. to help with your decision. Good luck

I have a 7.5 foot Western on my 2006 F250. Yeah, I know it's too small, but my
driveway is a PITA to maneuver in so I wanted the smaller plow. I had an 8 footer
on my previous 99, the new ultramount is nice!

I think mine was also around $3800, I got it from Van Dine Motors in Hackensack NJ.
You can find their listing on the westernplows.com web page. He originally told me
to plan on them having the truck for 2 days just in case but they finished it the
same day. Then again, my BIL stopped by and made sure they got it done, he's
bought more than a few plows from them over the years.

I like my 9'6"' Fisher V on my 05 F250 at work. We only buy Fisher, so no real first hand advice from me. Our local dealer stands by Fisher, he does not care for for 'cheaper' brands for commercial use.

Is the manual tranny a disadvantage when plowing due to the extra wear on the clutch?

I would think so. But it depends on the type of lot you are plowing. If you have a lot of long runs vs a lot of short runs.

I have the 8ft Western Pro Plow with the Ultra Mount. I just put my first season behind me and it was a sucessful one. Make sure you get the hand held control module. It makes life a lot easier.
