Guys,
I have an 89 f-250 4x4 in need of upper and lower ball joints. I have replaced ball joints in an older nova many years back and remember what a pain they were. I am wanting some idea of how hard a replacement this task is. I have air chisel, impact wrench and many tools. What speciality tool[s] are needed to press joint out of frame? I do not have a lift [sigh].... What is your opinion of this job? Is it something you would do again or pay?
Aside from the basic tools, you'll need a balljoint press and most likely a spindle puller (used with a slide hammer to remove spindle from knuckle). Not a hard job to do,but can be a little time consuming. It's all just nuts/bolts.
The OTC balljoint kit at Advance Auto you can rent works well. I bought mine, was about $100. You need the additional balljoint kit for a Ford, but, I always use my larbe impact sockets instead.
Very doable job with an impact wrench and the OTC ball joint kit. You do not need a lift, jackstands will do fine. FWIW: I would only jack up one side at a time.
