"On F100 - F350 and Bronco check the distance between the synchronizer and input shaft gear. If the distance is more than .070 to 0.95 inch, install the necessary thickness of shims between the third speed gear and the synchronizer brake drum."
And this from a GM NP435 manual:
"Using feeler gauges, check float in 3rd and 4th speed synchronizer assembly. Insert feeler gauges between mainshaft 3rd speed gear and 3rd and 4th speed synchronizer outer stop ring. Float should be from 0.050 to 0.070-inch. If necessary, disassemble the unit and add or subtract synchronizer adjusting shims as necessary to bring float within limits."
