OK. I took my in-the-cab gas tank to have the inside acid washed and coated. When I got there, my baby blue gas tank had been painted black! Why? Because they paint everything black, no extra charge! Well, the gas sending unit bolt threads are now full of paint. Does anyone know what would be the best way to remove the paint without ruining the inside coating?
The coating I used to seal the inside of my tank is polymer that is quite solvent resistant, since it is meant to be in constant contact with gasoline. I would wet a Q-tip with laquer thinner and clean the threads carfully.
Clean out the threads with a good sharp tap. If you have access to one, a Sprial Aluminum tap (made to tap aluminum and soft metals) will work better than a stardard tap but either should do the job. Be carefull you don't cross thread or jam and break the tap. The Assembler for what I run on my CNC job, cleans PVC plastic coating out of screw hole threads every day using a tap and rarely ever has and problems (this is a coating similar to the way powder coating is done but the part is heated then dipped in a powdered PCV plastic. It fills threads rather bad and is much thicker than paint.
