So back to the topic! With the ram air mod, a bigger exhaust, can someone confirm if the headers the were worth the coin spent in terms of extra performance. If so I would seriously consider a set, as I definately don't need a turbo for 97% of the driving I do.

If its the origional than you have a good thing going. International 7.3L IDI was the best motor you could get from the factory (for my year anyway). I can tell you personally after pulling a firetruck out of a ditch with only a 2wd they can hold their own.

another email from stan-

A signal 3 1/2" exhaust will work fine depending on what mufflers you use. You should build a new "Y" section using 3" mandrel tube. I cannot guarantee horse power or torque gain, all I say is that this (55 horse power) was the normal when these trucks were new and they were changed out with headers and dual 2 1/2" exhaust. Dual 2 1/2" exhaust is 36 1/2 percent larger in the inside measurement that one 3" tube is inside. This is why the 3 1/2" is so good depending on the mufflers used.

The inside of one 3 1/2" tube is 8.946 sq. in. The inside of two 2 1/2" tubes is 8.86 sq. in. The inside of two 3" tubes is 12.982 sq. in. and the inside of one 4" tube is 11.793 sq. in.

As you can see if you build a "Y" section using two 3" pipes, it would be best to use one 4" exhaust. With 4" exhaust we offer a "Donaldson" 33 1/2" body muffler that flows approximately three times as much as the 4" mufflers offered by most of the exhaust manufacturers. If you have any more questions please let me know. STAN

i guess auto jet used to make a high flow y-pipe for our trucks. i emailed them to see if it's still available, and if so what the pricing is on it.

i'll keep you guys updated.

I did a little searching online and thought I would update this thread. Anywho, what are the torque gains with these headers? I have seen alot of long tube systems but not for diesel. Also, where would you mount a pyro? I plan to crank up the IP but no way to really mount a pyrometer. I also thought I saw somewhere that those headers were 16 guage steel?? Not sure but I would like to find out...I have yet to install the turbo I have on hand so I'm still torn between installing it or getting a set of headers...

I had a pyrometer fitting added to the top of #6 pipe when I ordered the headers. The e-mail correspondance with a member in northern B.C. who put on a set in late 2004, claimed he had extreme performance improvement, way more pick up and power, plus gained 6 mpg highway performance. I am installing this week end, will let you know what I think- PS they look great!! Search for web site: Stans Headers, listed under their stock headers P/N 269. PS tell him I want a commission.

I wonder what they would sound like. A buddy of mine ran true dual straights on his diesel. That truck is so loud, you can't hear anything inside the cab with the windows up. That was with stock manifolds...just think of what those headers would do!

Dave, I have true 3inch dual exhaust with free flow mufflers and it's not that loud at all, till you stomp on it around 2300 rpm...then it sounds like a Harley!!

Well , I got the headers on, look good, fit well. I have a 3" Y pipe just behind my transmission cross bar, was easy to hook up a 3" direct from the passanger side, the drivers side was a challange as the header ends up just ahead of the transmission pan, and needs the cross over tube to run under the pan. got er done. Performance seems a little peppier, but so far only driving around town with no load. I will post back when I've had a chance to load it up on the highway.

Yah, me too- none around here that I know of. All I know is I have good flow of exhaust out. only 3" system though, next time I need an exhaust I will be putting a
4" from behind the y pipe. My gut feeling with the headers so far (two days of in town driving) is that my speed to engine RPM is better, will cruse along at 1100 rpm with what use to take 1500, with EO4D.
