Hello all... i just bought an 01 f250 s.d. 4x4 diesel lariot trim. Awsome truck!! I've had fords most of my life but never a diesel. If i ask simple questions, bear with me!! Thanks, Jeff
Check out the 7.3L PSD section a ways down on the main forums list... lots of good discussion about your engine in there. Also, check out the Common Mods sticky in that section. Finish reading that and you'll be an expert.
Thanks for the replies. I'm trying to get thru this site and it seems confusing! Anyway, i've been reading some mags, and never having owned a diesel before, saw that there is ALOT to learn!! To that end, what can i do to get the motor to breathe easier and exit the truck easier? Anyone have a favorite brand or result to share? All i really want to do it make the motor as efficiently as possible because i travel alot for my job and look to the diesel motor to last far longer than a gas one. Jeff
New 7.3L owner?--do yourself a favor and use the search feature to educate yourself on the CPS (camshaft position sensor). When mine went out (keep your truck long enough and yours will go out too), it drove me nuts trying to figure it out until I stumbled onto this AWESOME site. I even dropped the tank thinking that I might have trash or something in it. Had I heard about the symptoms ahead of time, I would have had it fixed in a snap!
I just became the owner of an 06 F250 Super Duty 4x4 with the awesome 6.0 power plant. Never owned a 4x4 or a diesel before. Looking forward to some off-roading adventures ahead. I'm interested in getting more mpg and hp out of this unit. Any suggestions?
Hi, I have just test drove a 2003 F350 diesel 6.0L. Boy does the truck move. I am considering replacing my Ram 2500 V10 8.0L (mpg maybe 10 if lucky) with this truck. It burns gas like there is no tomorrow. Have some concerns before buying one though, as they cost more of a premium then gas engines. I have fixed gas, but not diesel, and never owned a diesel. Hope someone can answer a few questions below.
1). What is considered high milliage for 2003 in a diesel?
2). Does limited slip differential makes a difference on a 4 X 4?
3). How long will these engines last?
4). Is it easier to fix, then gas engines?
5). Are these engines expensive to fix? Are they as expensive as foriegn parts?
with an open differential, 1 wheel is guaranteed to get power. so, as soon as one wheel loses traction, it'll start spinning. in effect, you're guaranteed 1wd per axle.
if you're in 4H or 4L, both axles are getting power, but at any time, no more than 2 tires are guaranteed to be spinning....which are probably gonig to be the ones on ice, mud, or in the air.
with a limited slip, you're *pretty*much guaranteed both wheels per axle will spin at equal speeds, giving you guaranteed 4wd. they only allow tires to rotate at different speeds in situations like a turn on pavement.
