2007 decision

I want to trade my Ranger in and get a new 2007. I can't decide between the 3.0 and 4.0. I pull a small fishing boat and my main concern will be reliabailty. Is the 3.0 a good engine? I had one in 1992 but had problems with it.

From what I have heard, both engines are great. I personally would take the 4.0 because it gets almost as good gas mileage and has a lot more power. The 3.0 has been around a bit longer. However, Ford boosted the powertrain warranty to 5 years/60,000 miles just recently....if that helps at all. Piece of mind in the least....

The 3.0 or 3.slow as I've heard numerous people say, is not the fastest engine, but it's is reliable. The 4.0 having OHC is a pretty fast runner and is also pretty reliable. Like 6ltr said, they get about the same MPG's. Personally I'd probably go with the 4.0. Sometimes it's better to have a few more horses under the hood than not enough right?

Are you going 4x4 or not? If not, the 2.3 is an extremely reliable engine. From what I hear, they are pretty peppy too. Nothing like a V6, but when gas is hittin $3 a gallon, those few extra MPG's might be a little easier on your wallet in the long run.

I'd go 4.0L, simply because of the HUGE power advantage over the 3.0L, and the gas mileage being the same. The 3.0L is a very good, durable engine, though.

I'm considering a 2007 myself. I want a V6 as well. There is an $800 cost difference but according to what I've found, the fuel economy is nearly equal.

The 3.0 only has 148HP and ~170 Torque vs. 4.0 of 207 HP and XX Torque. The ratings of the 3.0 are barely above the 2.3 I-4 motor, only 5 more HP I think.

I think I'm going to spring for the $800 and get the 4.0 since you can get the tow package allowing you to tow up to 6,000 lbs.

Best of luck,
Eric

one more thing to consider, the 3.0 makes its power higher in the r.p.m. band than any of the other ranger engines, you gotta wind it out to get the power outta it. the 3.0 is a good engine, but the 4.0 is just as good of a motor, gets decent milage, and doesnt need the squrreils wrung out of it to get into the powerband. its worth the money. go 4.0!
