I just got an 82 F-150 and I'm trying to get the engine to idle better. It's got the 2bbl 351w. Runs great except for idle, it's very rough and you have to set the idle up pretty high to keep it running, especially when you put it in gear. It's been a while since I've messed with carbs and I'm not really sure about even setting the timing with this eec III. I know to pull the vac line but not sure if there's a spout like on later FI motors to set the base timing.
It seems like maybe carb related. If I close off the choke a little bit it seems to smoth out and rev higher.
well,to tell u the truth these eec systems are ***** and ur better off paying some money to switch it to the later system but um,first change out ur O2 sensor then if that doesnt help, idk, but everyone will be around to help
well, it looks like some of the eec system isn't even there. No O2 sensor and other stuff like that. It seems to just be hooked up to the distributor. I'd like to switch over to a regular old vac/mech advance distributor. I pulled a vaccum on the modulator on the distibutor, it doesn't hold at all. When I try to set the timing to 10d btdc it runs horrible.
I messed with the idle mixture on the carb, that helped a bit. I don't see an EGR valve and various other things like that. Plugs. wires, cap and rotor look pretty new. Carb appears to be a fairly new reman unit.
I'll keep tinkerin with it and welcome any suggestions. I don't care for this eec III very much, especially since it's been messed with alot on this truck. I do like the later ones I've had on 5.0 mustangs.
well if some is hooked to the eec and others arent thasts the reason ur running like crap, wut u need to do is pull all of it out and go with a whole ds2 set up
I like that DS II idea. I'll have to look around and see if I can find one. It looks like a pretty simple setup. I think that would work better with the parts missing from the current system.
I'm not exactly sure what setup is on it. I picked up a reman distributor and it fixed it right up. The computer had been removed from under the seat and everything else involving the EEC has been removed. It idles and runs very well now. The brake booster has a pretty good leak but I have a new one on the way.
This is my 1st 351W, my 1st 80-86 F-150 as well. I really like this truck, one of my favorites thus far.
When you replace the ignition, keep an eye on eBay for an MSD-6A ignition box. You can get a wiring harness from MSD to plug it into the Duraspark system. Improves MPG and performance, especially at lower RPM's.
I pulled the carb (MC 2150) today to check it out and do some cleaning. Well, now it's missing at higher rpms. Runs very strong till a certain rpm (don't have a tach) then it starts banging out (missing)
I have a feeling it may be leaning out for some reason. All I did toady was pull the carb and clean out the vac. passages, checked the power valve, pulled the throttle shaft and cleaned the rust off the butterflys, pulled out the idle mixture screws and cleaned them up.
