what year bed will work

I want to put a short bed on my 1986 f-350 I need to know what years will look right as far a body lines goes. I was thinking of a step side what years will work for that as well. One more question on the stepside beds what year did ford start putting in metal instead of wood and are the fenders metal or fiberglass on the 80-86 models.

i cant answer all your questions but i did actualy cut my frame because i wanted a 6 foot instead of 8 and put a bed off a 95 flareside/stepside whichever people prefer to call it on my truck. pics are in my gallery i think it looks decent body lines are pretty close imo. the sides are fiberglass and the floor is steel. hope that helps a little bit

1980 to circa 1987-1988 would be the best choice for looks. (I forget the exact year they dropped the flareside, with the 1987-1991 bodystyle. Anyone here know?)

The 1987 style fenders are slightly different but a 1980 to 1986 style can be bolted on easy it that makes a difference. Not many flaresides after 1986. Only seen two of the 87 style around here. One red, and one white.

They have wooden floors, and not sure about all of them but the ones I've seen have fiberglass fenders.

The 1992 to 1996 have metal beds just like the Styleside counterparts, with two ply metal bedsides. The bodylines are a little different but compatible.

Hope ths helps.

Yes the wheelip is rounded on the 1987 style fenders, and on the newer 1992 style fenders.

Other than that the bodylines line up excelent.

Some people would care about the wheelip, and some don't.

Hence, some people may want to put 1980 to 1986 chrome wheelip mouldings on their truck, and they wouldn't fit on the fenders of the later bed.

If you are going to ever show the truck, I would go with the style the year truck came with. Judges give more points for stock, and subtact points for aftermarket or year specific changes that don't belong.

Just my two cents.
