It is a real hot one today in my town at about 104. I was driving my 93 Bronco 351 with E40D Trans around town and after I parked it I noticed that it was dripping transmission fluid from around converter access plug. Is there trans fluid behind that or did I break a seal some where and it is leaking ? I did not have any leaks before today. It has been really tight. Any comments or advice ?
The plug you are referring to is an inspection plug only and there to keep crud OUT of the bellhousing. If there is fluid coming out from the plug, you have a problem. Either the front seal on the tranny itself has failed, or the torque converter seal has failed. Either way the problem should be addressed ASAP. If the truck is still driving and shifting normally, have it checked out right away to avoid potentially doing any damage to the trannsmission internal components.
Thanks for the tips on the seals. I pulled the rubber plug on the bottom of the bell housing to confirm that was the leak and found that it was dry on top of the plug. I felt up inside the hole and found that it was dry as well. I guess it looks like the front seal on the trans. It only leaks about a teaspoon of tranny oil but any leak can lead to worse problem. I also had someone tell me that when it gets real hot that the seal will expand a little causing a leak but will reseal ( temps that day were 104 degrees so can't imagine how hot it was in the trans ). Don't know if there is any truth to that or not but I will have to check it over the next couple of days to be sure. Any body else had this issue ?
