I recently bought a set of headers, intake and carb for my 300 I6, The headers were a little rusty so to dress them up on the cheap I was thinking about wrapping them. I poked around looking for wrap and found some guy ranting about how they tear your exhaust up. Something about not dissipating the exhaust heat. He might be full of it but I thought I'd ask you guys first and see what you thought. I like the looks of black wrap, so that's not the issue here, I just want to know if I'm gonna trash my new headers.
My understanding is that the problem is not so much the lack of heat disipation, but with the heating and cooling, moisture will build up through condensation. With the wrap on, this moisture won't evaporate off and will eventually cause the headers to rust. If you really want to make them look good, I'd get them cleaned and either ceramic coated or painted with some high-temp paint.
Even if the paint doesn't last, the headers will last several years naked, despite what the ceramic coaters tell you... unless you live in a place where they use more road salt than they do here. No more than cheap bare headers cost, replacing them every decade or so isn't a really big deal.
