4x4 Power Steering

Hey Guys,
I know this has been beat into the ground...but I have not seen too much about converting a 4-wheel drive to power steering. Is it the same as a 2-wheel drive? The problem being, that my truck is now all together except we got a new steering wheel and took the other off and this one doesn't fit and we broke the other in the process. With that happening I would just assume put on a grant NORMAL sized steering wheel. I do however have 33x12.5x16.5 BFG All-terrains so I'm thinking I may have some problems steering with a regular one...right? Or would it be that bad turning? Thanks for any input guys!

I've been thinking about doing this to my truck. I think that it can be done with a 78'-79' steering box. Is your truck a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton? If it's a 3/4 ton you'll probably have some problems with the leaf springs, because the box is mounted on the outside of the frame.

Mine is a 3/4 ton so I hope there aren't to many difficulties! I was just wondering how much modifications and stuff you would have to do to put this on there. It would be really nice to have, that's for sure. Like swapping the steering column and fabricating new stuff to get around the leafs like you said. Any input appreciated!

If you can get a power steering box out of a 78'- 79', F-150, F-250, Bronco, it will get mounted on the outside of the frame in front of the driver's tire. Where as ours is on the inside of the frame behind the tire. This is the simple part. Now you need to figure out a way to mount the steering column out of the same rig. I haven't looked into that much yet, but shouldn't be too difficult. Next comes the hard part. What (I think) you would have to do is cut your pitman arm that is on your steering knuckle so that it is shorter, to keep the rod going from the steering box, to the pitman arm parallel with the frame. I think that may be all you have to do, besides mount the power steering pump and run your lines. If you have any more questions, write me an e mail. Hope this helps

Thanks man,
That doesn't sound like toooo bad of a task. So i'm taking it its not possible to use the old steering column with it? As for all of the cutting and such, we'll have to see when that comes and i'm sure we can handle it...a torch and a welder can do wonders. Thanks for the replies.

I really doubt that you can use your old steering column, I don't think it will work with the newer steering box. Good luck I hope my info helped. Write another forum when your finished. I'm interested in seeing how it turned out.

I am having the some problem with my 64 3\4 ton 4x4. I don't know if its the same as yours. On mine the gear box sits on the inside of the frame. The pinion shaft passes through the frame with the pitman arm mounted vertically on the shaft, which is attached to the drag link that runs down the drivers side wheel. You find a similar set up on most semi trucks. The closest thing I have found to this on the late 70s f250s. The only differences I could see is the box is located further forward on the frame with an extention shaft between the column and the box. Other than this it has the three bolts that hold the box on and I'm not sure wether they will line up with holes on the 60s style frame. If I find out any more I let you know.

I was going add P/S to my 66 F100 4x4. I have a 78 -79 Bronco box etc, if you need one.
