Today when I hooked on to my 7600 pound travel trailer and towed it in to my house from the lake I was paying attention to my EGT gauge. I was running constant temps of 1100 - 1200. I was towing in Overdrive and going about 65 mph. My boost was at approx 10 pounds. My superchips was set at the tow setting (Old 1700 model setting #1 of 2). Am I running hot or normal? should I program back to stock when pulling my trailer? Should I shift down one gear? This is the first time towing my trailer and in the morning we are setting out for a 3 hour voyage. I appreciate your replies.
That's a little hot to me. Sometimes when pulling my travel trailer and in Overdrive I'll get up close to those kind of temperatures when pulling up hill. I'll usually switch out of overdrive (to 3rd) untill I'm running on a more flat road and over 65 mph.
........ Also when I used to have a SCMT I noticed that particular tuner would make Egt's hotter (much hotter) than what I use now which is a DP Tuner flip chip. ( much cooler )
That does seem a little hot, but remember that Navistar specs the engine to run at 1250* sustained EGT's without damage. Still, I'd try shifting down a gear on grades or try the stock programming. But, don't be worried about damage running at 1100* constantly. I had a really strong headwind while towing once, and I was running 1100* pretty consistantly for a couple hours.
Well, that seems about right then.
Here's some food for thought on considering a better exhaust. I can be towing my trailer in OD and the EGT will hover around 900 with the boost going up and down between 10 and 20 psi. The slightest hill and it spools right up. It's not until I hit a big hill and the engine has to go to full throttle will the EGT go over 1000.
To reach 1200 the hill has to be big enough to slow me down even at WOT and the boost at 26 psi. If I turn off the cruise control and go 9/10's throttle than the EGT drops to 1150 and the boost to 24 but I still don't have to shift down. I've found that these engines do thier best work between 2000 and 2500 rpm. Above 2500 and the EGT starts to climb too high.
That's at 24,000 GVW and a 4.88 rear axle. 2400 rpm at 68 mph in OD.
Six speed 4X4.
AIS intake.
Boost and Pyro.
5" exhaust.
Diablo Predator in the Tow/Haul mode.
Wastegate control rod set to 10-12 psi and enabled.
Stock injectors.
Well just to let you all know, I made the trip with the truck in stock mode and my temps ran a constant around 1000 degrees. When climbing some of the grades my temps did hit 1200. The truck towed perfectly fine bone stock. I appreciated some earlier advice from another forum that it is the torque that tows trailers not the horsepower.
