I had to take a horse to the vet today and it was pretty windy out. Driving into a 40 mph headwind on flat road I was seeing 800-900 egt. Going over every overpass between my house and the vet my alarm went off on the gauge. I had it set for 1100 at first. I bumped the alarm up to 1200 and it still went off going up the other side of the canyon. About a 1 mile 6% grade. My boost was running about 14 or 15 ( it was at about 20 before I started losing speed) and I had slowed to about 60mph by the top of the hill. I was only going 65 to begin with. It was smoking black just a bit going up that hill but not much at all. Is that normal? My trucks a 94 F350 4x4 srw. I've got a 4 inch exhaust and tymar intake. My chip was in the tow setting and trailer weighed about 11000 pounds with one horse in it. It's a BIG horse trailer. Coming back with a tail wind it didn't go off once and on the flat roads egt was barely registering. I'm pretty panicky about my truck sometimes. I just installed those gauges and the TW chip so wanting to make sure I'm not messing up anything.
What kinds of things can I do to get EGT's down other than an intercooler? I'm already planning to install the banks cooler next month.
Oh, I'm running straight bio diesel too. Not sure if that has anything to do with it but I have noticed a slight loss of power since I stopped mixing it. Not much but noticeable. It's only 3 bucks a gallon so..........
What you are saying is normal. It also sounds like you pulled real well. The intercooler will knock off 150=200*. I went one step further and added water injection called coolingmist. That knocks off 200* also. I've been running TW for years now and his chips have a rep for smoke. Don't get me wrong, I like Tony but I'm just telling you what I've heard and what I have experienced. I've gotten three reburns from him in the last 3 months and it was smokey, no smoke (no power) then smokey again. I ask for something inbetween and can't seem to get it. You can read my thread 'my trip and DTC's' and see that I went from a real smokey heavy tow setting to economy setting and settled on light tow mode for the rest of my 1,100 mile trip. Bottom line, I need live tuning.
me too. you can see back in time with those! but sometimes when you are trying to check out a set of 'seat belt boobies' in traffic, they get in the way
I only have one tow setting. He said I didn't need the heavy one with a stick shift. This one has enough power and it comes on at a lot lower RPM than I have ever seen before. I love it for pulling out into traffic! I also got the econo, stock and extreme settings.
The smoke didn't bother me at all. I know it's part of the game. I am real curious how bad my egt got when I had the fully loaded trailer and my camper in the bed though. I tried running in stock mode a bit yesterday and it didn't seem to drop any. Power sure dropped though!!!
FWIW I just love these glowshift gauges!!!! I don't have to watch them. They have visual and audible alarms. The only thing I wish they could redesign is the dimmer. I have them hooked into my dimmer circuit but it only dims them a little bit. They don't go with the other gauges at all. It's just two brightness settings. One with the lights on and one with them off.
Joesph, I know what your saying, I like the smoke too, when I want it. If I don't like someone tail gating me or whatever, I put it in extreme and make him disappear, LOL. Its just that on long trips pulling my 5er I want all the power I can get without black smoke. Black smoke is unburned diesel, I'm probably just dreaming but I would like all of it turned to energy. Especially when it hits $5 to $7 dollars a gallon! (I hope to God I'm wrong about it going up more!!!)
Are you trying to pull hills in OD or are you shifting down first? You don't have many choices, it's just not possible to tow heavy at significantly higher HP levels without an IC. Shift down, rev higher, keep the boost up is about all you can do other than turn the chip down and slow down. Stock rigs will hit 1200F easily, chip and injectors will get you there a lot quicker. I had way more power than I could use until I added the IC. I still have to watch it on tough hills when towing.

Are those off of an old Ambulance? i think I remember a post a while back about someone getting them off of one and loving them. I'm looking for something similar right now. In the interim I added a 6in extension bar (alum scrap with 2 holes drilled into it) to push the mirrors out for towing. The problem now is that they are so far out int he wind that they are easily moved in a headwind or when traveling over 65mph. Bummer, but it was a budget fix and without them I wouold barely be able to see the side of the trailer let alone traffic behind me.
Also, what are the EGT ranges I need to be mindful of while towing my 5er?
Thanks,

I was told to never pull in OD (auto trans). Is this incorrect?
Thanks
I've got the same mirrors on my truck and love them. I had to buy another truck to get them though. Ford doesn't sell them anymore and aftermarket ones suck!!
I was running in overdrive. I hate downshifting this truck! I usually won't even try till it gets down to 55. I never have had any synchronizers in this trans. The last owner wasted them all since Ford was more concerned with ripping him off than fixing the clutch right. A new ZF47 is another plan this summer! Right after the intercooler and air ride seats next month!
As for towing in OD with the automatic I'd get a trans temp gauge. If you aren't in hills or going into a fierce headwind it will be ok but you don't even want to lug it in od. A good friend of mine just traded her 97 powerstroke for a new Dodge because she is always pulling her horse trailer in the mountains and the trans temps were just not manageable no matter what we did to it. I kept asking her if she was running it in overdrive but never got a good answer. My 02 f250 that I had fried the transmission twice running in OD with this horse trailer. That thing was a piece of junk but still I should have turned it off.

What year did you get the mirrors off of? did you have to drill/tap new holes for the loewr arms and what did you use to cover the old holes?
