oh ya ,forgot to say that since i took the filter off of the egr vacuum solenoid and cleeaned it,the codes 1401 and 1409 havent come back on,just the lean codes. Its working much better right now,but not quite right yet.
Sounds like fuel pressure now. Running a little lean, and stalling/choking on hills.
Have you changed the fuel filter on the frame rail? That could do it. If not you will need a fuel pressure gauge to troubleshoot with.
thats what i am thinking,i know the filter on the pump was pretty dirty when i put a new tank on,i cleaned it the best i could, ford garage told me you cant buy just the filter. And i wasnt aware that there was a filter on the frame rail.Which one are you talking about, the one under the truck, drivers side ?Or is there another one i dont know about?
It should be about halfway back, drivers side, frame rail. Its about 3-4 around. Mine was a huge pain to get the connections off. Don't....Don't pull the lines until you have the tool in.
It uses a splined/finger type spring ring quick connect. If you pull on it, it will bend the fingers, and then the tool wont work. If it's already messed up, you just have to pull really hard, without messing up your fuel lines. Both sides of mine were jacked from the previous owner. My parts store had lots of fuel line tools, but the only one that worked was a blue(or red?) alumunim tool. He did give me the fuel filter with the truck though.
I had the same codes up until last night at 7:00 p.m. Check your PCV Valve hose. Mine was broken in half about halfway under the intake. Hard to inspect it if you can't see it.
I had these codes for about two months. I changed all sorts of stuff. About $450 worth to be exact.
Thats were the propane comes in handy. It will get sucked right into any cracked hoses and change the engine speed.
When I pulled my intake to replace the lower gasket 3 or 4 of the tiny vauum lines broke, I think one was the pvc. A couple rubber pieces and a 3 foot roll of tube fixed it right up.

Just trying to help. I know how frustrating it is to search for these problems.
I still have codes coming up.
P0411 and P0420
I had taken apart my AIRD/AIRB Valve to clean it and check the diaphrams and during reassembly the spring moved and the diverter valve wasn't functioning.
I took it apart this morning and reassembled correctly. I performed the tests in the Haynes manual and it seems to be woking fine now.
I will drive around today and see if the codes come back.
You guys are doing a great service for people like myself that don't feel the need to pay a service center $89 an hour to come back and tell me that they need to do further testing.
well i went all over the engine with the propane, cant find any leaks. Also took off the pcv hose ,it looks fine.Took off the egr valve and cleaned it.Still getting lean codes. The truck works great in town ,but still hesitates and sputters ,sometimes it will pick it up ,when i put the peddle to the floor.Still acts like its not getting enough gas at high speed.Im not sure if its getting too much air or not enough gas .Still get the lean codes 171 and 174.I`m still thinking its the **** on the fuel pump plugged, guess ill have to try to get a new one or run it without it on the pump.
You definitely have a vacum leak somewhere. I replaced every vacum line this weekend with rubber hose. I used a piece of heater hose as a conduit for the line to keep them off the intake and any other areas that could melt them. I also wrapped each line with colored tape to match the color of the hard plastic line.
I was just frustrated chasing those same codes. It took about an hour and a half to run all new lines. Go to AutoZone and get several different sizes of hose.
You will be surprised when you find the line. Did you nalso check your Vacum Canister for leaks? Those can develop cracks. You should also check your Intake Manifold and the gasket.
I am off to order a new set of Catalytic Converters for around $360. All of my codes dissappeared except P0420.
thanks for the help,i guess ill change the vacuum lines. How did you attach the rubber hoses to things like the vacuum regulator solenoid and places like that? Also, which is the vacuum canister,i know my 88 had a juice can ,but i dont think theres one on my 96.I had the intake manifold gasket replaced already,so i dont think its that. You dont think its a fuel problem?
Problem solved!!!! I put in a new fuel pump,it made some difference...i cant believe its the same truck. No more codes,i guess the old pump must have been going bad.
