Angry Can no longer program a personal entry code

I've had a 2004 Ford Escape for about a year. I have the 5 digit factory code and can use it to unlock the vehicle. When I first bought the vehicle I programmed a 5 digit personal entry code and it was accepted and worked fine. All of a sudden this code no longer works and I can't seem to program in a new code. When I try, I enter the factory code, hear the door unlock, I press the 1-2 button within 5 seconds and then enter a new 5 digit code. It just won't take it. The new code has a 3 in it and when I enter the 3 the rest of the doors unlock, as if the systen doesn't know I'm trying to enter a new code. I'm at a loss.

You could try "de-programming" the personal code first. The directions I have to do this is:

enter factory code
press 1/2 button
press 7/8 and 9/10 together

I have tried that too. I'm beginning to wonder if the 1/2 key is not working. The factory code doesn't use it and I'm able to use the factory code. My original personal code used the 1/2 key and also the 1/2 key is used to change the personal code. All I know is that all worked fine for months and all of a sudden the personal code no longer works and I can't program in a new one. Strange!

(I guess you know that after you enter a valid code and then press 3/4 it will unlock all the other doors.)
As far as 1/2 button working or not, you could pres 7/8 and 9/10 together to lock doors, then press the factory code with the 1/2 button in the middle of the code sequence, if it unlocks the door the 1/2 button must not be working.

here is all i could find pertaining to programming of the door which you already know but

Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Keypad

The RKE keypad is located on the exterior of the driver door and provides a method for the customer to access the vehicle without a key or RKE transmitter. The RKE keypad feature:
  • locks all doors and inhibits the door lock control switch UNLOCK capability after 20 seconds (if the inhibit feature is enabled).
  • unlocks only the driver door.
  • unlocks all doors.
  • programs/erases the customer key code.
  • enables/disables the autolocking.
The RKE keypad feature operates independently of ignition status, vehicle speed, or transmission position. When a RKE keypad button is pressed, the RKE keypad buttons illuminate to provide better visibility. If LOCK ALL DOORS is entered or 5 seconds have elapsed since the last button press, the illumination is turned off.

Each vehicle equipped with a RKE keypad is programmed with a 5-digit entry code. This code is provided to the customer through a wallet card in the Owner Literature package. In addition, this code is available through a diagnostic tool and is also printed on the vehicle security module label. When entering codes each digit must be entered within 5 seconds of the previous button press.

Programming Personal Codes

A unique personal 5-digit code can be programmed by following these steps:
  1. Enter the factory set 5-digit code (the RKE keypad will illuminate when pressed).
  1. Press the 1/2 button within 5 seconds of Step 1.
  1. Enter the unique 5-digit code.
The personal code does not substitute for the permanent factory set code. Either code can be used to access the vehicle. In addition, if a second personal code is programmed, it will simply overwrite the previous personal code.

Anti-Scan Feature

To provide added security, the RKE keypad is disabled for 1 minute after 35 button presses without a valid entry code being entered. The RKE keypad flashes during this 1-minute mode with all functionality disabled except for the 7/8 and 9/0 buttons still being allowed to lock the vehicle.

Anti-Scan turns off after any of the following events:
  • 1 minute of RKE keypad inactivity
  • the key is turned to the ON position
Unlocking the Doors with the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Keypad System

To unlock the driver door, enter either the factory set code or the personal code (each digit must be pressed within 5 seconds of the prior digit). The interior lamps will illuminate.

To unlock all doors, enter either the factory set code or the personal code (driver door unlocks) and press the 3/4 button within 5 seconds.

Locking the Doors with the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Keypad System

It is not necessary to enter the factory set or personal code prior to locking all doors. To lock all doors, press the 7/8 and 9/0 buttons at the same time.
