Getting the Oil Filter off

I changed oil in my 06 F150 5.4 for the first time (1500 miles), and I was amazed at the spot they put the oil filter. My F260 6.0 was great! and I figured Ford would have moved all the motors to the top of the engine filter. Oh well.

I had a hadr time getting a set of dogs in there to get it out, and my oil filter tool would not budge it. What are you guys using? The new oil filter I put in has a lot more ridges in the end, and looks like it would take a totally new tool to get it off?

Thanks

NMU,

It's very common for the factory oil filter to be put on so tight that some guys have to drive a screwdriver through it to get it off. The FORD factory installs them too tight.

Now that you have changed it yourself, and assumably only hand tightened it, you'll not have that problem ever again.

Oh, I also used to have a 6.0 PSD and loved the location of the oil filter!

BTW, get yourself a Fumoto oil valve to replace the oil pan drain plug. No more tools and you'll won't get a drop on your hands. ( www.lubricationspecialist.com )

I ordered the fumoto a while ago, just went to put it in, too small... I have a f101-n... it sucked cause I always change to a fumoto valve first oil change.

There has to be some tool to get it off?

oil valve

This think looks pretty cool, had anyone had any problems with this installed? How about a picture to show how far is sticks out? I have not yet checked the location of my drain plug on my F150 5.4L, will it be out of harms way?

TRX,

I've used Fumoto valves for years with ZERO problems. They are very similar to the factory plug in profile (only slightly bigger) so, no, it does not stick out too far at all.

Remember, tha drain plug on the 5.4 is not on the bottom of the pan. It's on the bottom of one SIDE of the pan.

Great, thanks for the reply. I still would be interested in a picture of theirs installed if possible. I did see a couple pictures when I googled fumoto, but they all were zoomed in too far.

Oil filter wrench from Pep Boys will get the filter off without effort.

Just a question, but why would you want to change the oil at 1,500 miles? It does absolutely nothing.

Thanks

Because it is a brand new engine. It is getting broke in. There will be metal filings in the oil. It is best to get them out ASAP. Many people change it at 500, 1500 and 5000 miles. Then they continue with the 5000 or whatever oil changes. Oil is cheap compared to a new engine.

1) I agree with Matt above...I changed oil early and often during break-in.

2) I have a Fumoto valve w/ nipple, to allow a hose to be connected to direct the oil into the pan. It really doesn't extend vary far out at all...I have no concerns with accidental damage to the valve.

3) I got a Sears 3-claw wrench that fits on the end of a 1/2" extension bar to get that first filter off, and it helps during subsequent changes.

4) I'm also using Motocraft filters and oil. I may change to Wix filters, but will stay with MC 5W-20...it's a good oil.

It is a total waste of time and money to change the oil at 1,500 miles. You need the rings to break in and form a tight seal against the cylinder wall. You won't get that if you change at that early of an interval. The metal filings will be caught by the magnetic drain plug and/or oil pickup filter. They wil not make it back up to circulate through the engine.

I personally see no need for the nipple version. These trucks are high enough that it's easy to get an oil pan under but not high enough to get a bucket to use with a drain hose. YMMV

I love it when people make comments like that. It shows that they have never owned a high performance motor(the 5.4 is not one!) or that they understand oil properties.

Im a high performance marine application, you are told by the manual to change your oil at 5 hours. Are the rings set by then. heck no, nothing is even broke in, but the breaking in of the engine, and extra stress, and heat created can break down the oil and additives in the oil.

So your argument is that todays oil is better, and synthetic will hold up to it. Well, thats a 1/2 truth. I am also not a beliver in Motorcraft oil. I like mobil 1.

Simple fact is, its my money, and I can do as I like to make myself happy.

BTW, how do you know that my truck is not 10 months old and would be recomended to have it changed by the manual? I guess you assumed...LOL...
