'unbreakable' socket universal joint

I need to torque a hitch bolt to 95 ft-lbs. I need a universal joint to get at it. I twisted a previous universal, but that may be because it was 3/8 drive or that it was an Autozone brand. Would a 3/8 Craftsman universal hold up? I'm not sure I can fit a 1/2 drive universal in this tight spot. Any suggestions?

Buy the impact style universal joint, they hold up much better, the only draw back is the angle of u-joint is minimized.

For 95 ft-lbs you probably should be using 1/2" drive sockets, especially if you are using a swivel socket.

I was taught never to use a universal joint with a torque wrench.
It's nearly impossible to get an accurate reading because the angle of the universal alters the effective distance from the handle to the fastener.

As long as the universal joint is not angled to much when torqued.

There is no way to get to this bolt except thru a universal. It won't be angled very much. I agree that the angle thru the universal will alter the effective torque arm and therefore the reading won't be accurate. The torque spec has a decent +/- tolerance so if I aim for the middle, it should be OK.

How about the Lowes Kobalt brand......any good?

lo, if it's not much of an angle, get a impact universal, like 1975Ford mentioned.

There a bit tougher.

Maybe look for an extension that allows some wobble, they are designed that way so you can use them in situations like yours.

I think it's called a wobble extension.

I use impact swivels and impact wobbles. As someone noted, the swivel UJ type things do poorly with a torque wrench.

Here is my impact swivel, Snap-On, 3/8. It measures exactly 1" in diameter. It will hold to 95 foot pounds using a 1/2" bolt.
