I need to torque a hitch bolt to 95 ft-lbs. I need a universal joint to get at it. I twisted a previous universal, but that may be because it was 3/8 drive or that it was an Autozone brand. Would a 3/8 Craftsman universal hold up? I'm not sure I can fit a 1/2 drive universal in this tight spot. Any suggestions?
I was taught never to use a universal joint with a torque wrench.
It's nearly impossible to get an accurate reading because the angle of the universal alters the effective distance from the handle to the fastener.
There is no way to get to this bolt except thru a universal. It won't be angled very much. I agree that the angle thru the universal will alter the effective torque arm and therefore the reading won't be accurate. The torque spec has a decent +/- tolerance so if I aim for the middle, it should be OK.
