Ive been having problems with my truck ever since I opened up the exhaust a little bit. It ran good for a while, but then just started to run like crap. I dont know much about this stuff, but I have heard that the TFI Modules are known for just randomly going bad. Could this be my problem? I have an '89 F250 with a 300 I6 4x4 and ever since I opened up the exhaust and intake a little I get almost no power, it sounds horrible (almost like its only running on a few cylinders or Im running out of gas) and the little battery charge gauge in my truck says its really low. I also thought that maybe the alternator could be the problem, but I still need to get that tested. Have any of you guys ever had the TFI Module go bad? How did you know it went bad if it did? I had a friend that had one go bad in his mustang, and he bought a new one and it runs good now. Do I even have one in my truck? I posted in the engine forum, but everybody seemed a little reluctant to post. Is this a very common problem with an older pickup like mine? Any advice would help me out, thanks.
The TFI module switches the voltage on and off to the coil, before the distributor. Normally when it fails, you get no spark, (as opposed to a couple missing cylinders). Sometimes it will work again when it cools down. I have only heard of it stalling out.
Both times my ignition modules went bad there was no warning. It just stop running instantly. You indicated that your battery was a little low or not charging. Look after that first and see how the vehicle runs.
You know i have had the exact same problem with my 87 f-150 i did a google search and came up with this, its little old but still helps to better find the problem http://www.autosafety.org/article.php?did=1216&scid=185I have also found that when you turn the truck off i dont hear it cooling itself and sometimes i do hear it, i havent been able to test it i was wondering if its better to take it to ford and just buy the 40$ tester cuz i can get the code reader for free.
