fuel gauge not working

The gas tank is full but the gauge is reads empty. What could it be ? is there any way to test the electrical without pulling the the gas tank?

Welcome to FTE

Ford changed the fuel tank and pump system about 4 times for the 87 -96 range. To get the most help please post your model year, tank setup (single/dual), and anything else related that could help spark a idea for other people.

For my tanks '96, dual tanks, 2 in tank hi pressure pumps: There is an electrical connector that connects to the fuel pump, and the tank level float, for each tank. Its about 2 feet long, the back is near the axle. I don't have my book handy ( I loaned it out) but there should be 3 or 4 pins. If you have dual tank it will go through the dash switch too. But I'm guessing you don't or you would have said something about it already.

You can check the harness side to be sure you are getting power to the pump and float. You could also measure the tank side resistance, when its full and when its empty. If the resistance doesn't change, it's either stuck or dead.

I have a 1988 f150 v6 . single tank. the tank is full off gas and the gauge reads empty. I pulled the harness from the top of the gas tank and turned the key on. the gauge went up past full. could it be the sensor or the float in the tank?

Sounds like it would have to be. If the gauge worked for you, then you probably have a dead float.

I don't know any other way than to pull the tank and check it. If it moves free, but the gauge doesn't replace it. If its stuck, you might replace too.

Anybody know this fuel pump?

could you just use glue and a needle/syringe to patch the old float?
push air into it, then glue the whole shut.

depends on which you have more of,

time or money

I'm short on both

this job is a fix and forget deal, any type of homemade repair will have you dropping the fuel tank again in a matter of months. New electrical related parts are the most effective way to go. IMO.

If your float is leaking its not an electrical problem its a leaking problem.
You could fix a leaking float with 5 dollar tube of epoxy.
