Not good in my opinion. How can we go from Mercon only to Mercon V? Just because it won't be mfg anymore? Did they change the V to be more non-v compatible? I like the part in the TSB where is says you can NOW service the 4R100 with V. Why NOW and not before?
Guess there's gonna be a ton of "what tranny fluid to use" threads...again. Just now the answer is different. Maybe this time they won't get so heated.
Folks might just wanna bookmark or save that URL/pdf.
I would imagine if they changed the Mercon-V spec, all Mercon V spec'd fluids out there in the aftermarket will change too.
What would I do? Use a brand-name Mercon fluid, like Castrol.
I've said it before, but I'll say it again. I am steadfast against using any Motorcraft fluids in my vehicles. My '96 t-bird had the oil changed at the dealer once with Motorcraft stuff. After 1500 miles, I learned to never do that again. It was BLACK. And this was at only 3K miles total on the engine, so there was no chance it was washing off crud from inside, it was really the oil deteriorating. Castrol was run through that engine for the next 60K miles, never turned more than a slight amber.
Now, their oils are better, but I still shudder at the thought
Kewart, your oil was black because the dealer put in what ever they had in there barrel, and coming from mecanics that work at the local dealer here it's usually 5w30 or 10w30 of the cheapest crap they can find. The only way you get MC 5w20 is if you specify thats what you want and even then it's suspect depending on whos working and how well they read the work order!
Generally speaking from the guys that have done blackstone oil analysis the MC oil is a very good oil for the price. I'm not saying castrol is a bad oil but your not gaining much of anything other than a lighter wallet and your own peice of mind buy using castrol.
Took our '05 Odyssey to the dealer for the oil change service (just did not have the time to do it myself). Came back after and found they did not use "HONDA" oil. They used Quaker State...
Not bashing QS, but thought they would give me Honda products when at Honda dealership. That is the only reason I took it to them.
If you do not specify, then they will use the cheapest they have.

I'm brand loyal to a fault. Work order said Motorcraft, but who knows.
Either way, I've often found other stuff lasts longer. Even their gear lube, regular 80w90, put in a brand-new 8.8" 3.73 rear that I setup (and know it was setup RIGHT) and the oil was pretty ugly pretty quick. Even after break-in, I changed it again, and within 20K miles it was ugly. Used Castrol or one of the other brand names you'd find on the local auto parts store's shelf, it's still quite clean.
I'll be the lone one out here in V10 land that doesn't like Motorcraft fluids, so never mind
