What to do?
I have an 89 ranger 4x4 with the 2.9L that was just retired to be my play truck. I have been given another 2.9L by my neighbor, and I am thinking of rebuilding it but am wondering what I could do to get more power out of it. I have access to a complete machine shop and about $600 to play with. I am looking at only the engine for right now. When the replacement engine is done I should have money for the rest vehicle. Any ideas would be helpful.

Can I refer you over to ranger power sports, they have a 2.9 section, and are more performance oriented. Out of the 5 rangers I've owned, not one has had the 2.9, but I love performance. If you had a 4.0 I could help. There will be some of our folks that will have some idea's for you I'm sure, STAY TUNED !!

Ok so you're trying to get more power out of the play truck or the new daily driver?
The 2.9L is kinda...denied for performance parts. You're not gonna find a lot. If you have access to a scrapyard, might start poking around for a 4.0L. They're a bolt in swap, come from the same engine family as the 2.9L, and have a good bit more power and torque. Plus there's actually an aftermarket presence for them.
