I am really paranoid about pulling the trim on my parts truck, I want to make sure it comes off in good shape, but I've never seen how it's attached. What's the best way to remove the trim without trashing it?
There are plastic clips that are pop riveted to the truck. The trim snaps onto the plastic clip. If you look real close along the edge of the trim you should be able to see the edge of the plastic clip. The ends of the trim probably are bolted so you'll need to remove the bolts first. A thin putty knife can be used to gently pop the trim loose from each clip. There are better tools to use made just for this you can get from places like Eastwood. The little cab corners pieces have two bolts and no clips. Just look behind all the pieces to make sure you get the bolts first. There are a couple of rubber grommets in the forward area of the bed where the bolts for the bed trim can be accessed.
After removing the bolts on the edges. I've had success just sliding them off the clips and then you can remove the clips individually. This can prevent bending on a tough clip or the like. Good luck.
Thanks guys-
I'm not worried about pulling the clips off, I have to do some light body work and then paint, I just need to get a hole fixed so I can get my 69 looking nice and pretty.
The tool trucks, Matco, Snap-on, Mac and a lot of the parts stores sell the special tools for removing trim without damaging it. Shoul only run about $20.00 or so for what you need on your truck.
when i took the trim off of my 68 f 100 just about every plastic clip broke, but what do you expect from 38 year old plastic... there is a guy on ebay that sells new trim clip sets for less than LMC charges, i think this guy is out of florida.
