As for the year of a truck being found on the Warranty Plate, that procedure started in 1969 the 1970 Model year trucks. It is in fact the date of manufacture, not necessarily the truck's model year. The 1969 and older model year trucks will not have that information on the warranty plate. The year of a truck can be determined from the VIN No. If you post it I am willing to look it up. This will only verify the VIN as being for a given year. It will not guarantee that someone didn't change this tag. There are some tell-tale ways to id a truck by sight. I'd suggest both methods since I suspect you didn't get a title/registration at auction.

Jason I have never been at an auction when someone there didn't know what year a car or truck was. Didn't you here anyone say what they thought it was. You didn't get anything on your sales recite clueing to the year date.
If you can come up with more info I'll bet you can get the answer that you want here.
I have been to some construction auctions and they often sell parts vehicles for just that with no title/registration and hawk it as "year unknown." They just receipt it with a physical description and whatever number they can find that resembles a VIN.

In New York the licensing authority is the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and they only get involved when you attempt to register the vehicle. Therefore, it's up to the buyer to make sure the seller provides a registration for vehicles older than 1973 or a certificate of title for 1973 and newer. If neither is available then the buyer must provide an affidavit of ownership from the Seller/owner and as much other paperwork as they request to prove ownership and right to transfer title. DMV makes the final decision on whether or not to issue the plates.

One easy way to come close is to look through the pictorial pages of this site. There are many pickups of each year. Look and see what yours resembles most. That will at least get you within a couple years.
I can't speak to the 1980 and newer Ford's, but I can tell you that the tenth digit of the VIN from a 79 or older truck is meaningless all by itself to determine the year.

Ford did not make many changes from year to year in their trucks (except every few years when they made major changes to bodies). To date a truck, the best thing to look at is the grill. Sometimes there are small changes in the front turn signal indicator lights, side trim pieces (chrome and brushed aluminum trim and reflectors), rear tailights and reflectors, etc.
Grille dating works as long as it has not been changed. They can be easily changed between the various styles for the given years that had similar body lines. Therefore, don't rely on that alone.
