Flywheel for 302?

LAST EDITED ON Jul-20-99 AT 02:29 PM (EST)

To the real Ford truck experts- (not the local Ford dealership!)

I am refinishing a 68 2WD 4sp manual. I have taken a 300-6 out of it, and am putting a 302-8 into it.

I have a flywheel off of the 300-6 (same tranny) and am wondering if the same flywheel could be attached for the 302.

The "engineering number" is the same between the 300-6 and a 302-8 flywheel, but the part numbers don't match in the books.

Mac's catalog lists the ring gear having different teeth (164 for 300 and 184 for 302). So now I am really confused.

Will it hurt anything to just go ahead and put the 300-6 flywheel back on?

Thanks for all the help. I knew that the 'real truck experts' would come through, after hours on the phone with the dealership.

Flywheel for 302?

Mark:

Let me preface this with "I am using data from a Ford Master Truck Part catalog for 1964-72 Trucks."

A 302 was not offered in the F-series until 1969. Therefore, how is it that you know you have a 1968 302 in your truck. Second, I show the 69/72 302 truck Flywheel to be part No. C6TZ-6375-C (there should be a casting code on engine side of the flywheel of "C7TE"). The ring gear for this flywheel should be a 164 tooth.

You don't mention a year for the 6 cyl. flywheel you have. As far as the 6 cyl I-240 or 300 is concerned there were several different flywheels used in the trucks and econoline vans between 1964 and 1972. There were 10" and 11" clutches depending on the application. I show three flywheels with 184 tooth gears and three with 164 tooth gears. Interestingly none has the same part no. as the 302 Flywheel.

As far as the Mac's info: catalogs in general are a handy references but should only be used as a guide; they tend to be incomplete and not necessarily exhaustive on part nos. and surprisingly they only put numbers in their catalog for the items they sell not for items which are obsolete or not stocked.

If you post back some more info on the items you have perhaps I can help sort out what flywheel you need.

I hope this helps.

Flywheel for 302?

The flywheels have different bolt patterns, they have this because of balance weights on the wheel itself. May be something else to look for.

Flywheel for 302?

I know you stated that your two flywheels have similar casting codes on them, but I was curious if you know what year the 302 is or what vehicle it came from. I believe that Ford changed how the 302 engine was balanced sometime in the 1980's. A different flywheel was used to accomplish this. You will want to make sure the flywheel you ultimately use is compatible.

Just another thought.

You brought up a great point about the year. I bought this engine completely rebuilt from a large engine remanfacturer. I will be looking for the codes at the bottom of the engine.

I called the engine place and they said it should be a 68-74 302 engine.

Thanks for all the advice. Will be looking at it closedly on Sat.

The 300 I6 did not use a counter wieght, while the 302 used a 28 1/2 ounce weight or a 50 ounce wieght, depending on the year. I'm not sure when they changed though.

Don't use the 240 flywheel on your 302! The 302 needs a flywheel with a counterweight on it, the 240 is internally balanced. Using the 240 flywheel on the 302 will cause an immense vibration you will not be able to live with.
