I'm trying to decide how to setup the Exhaust on my 302. I have some full length Hedman Hedders and when i get them installed i can't decide how i should setup the rest of the exhaust. What is everybody running, include pipe diameters if you can please.
I am running 3" long tube headers, 2.5 inch collectors, 2.5" "redhots" on backwards, 2.5" straits to and up over the axle, and upsize on the back side of the axle to 3" to mellow it out some, staight out the back.
I cut holes in the bumper and run them through it with chrome tips. Its only really loud when I get on it, and it sounds good. Its only loud at the back, and I have "mufflers" to comply with the "law" that says I have to have them.
I have cast iron manifolds 2 1/4" pipe running to what they called Super Turbos (or something like that)....2/1/2" from them to the 2 1/4" scavenger pipes exiting each side.
True Duals they call them.
The truck can be heard during a drive by at 65 mph.. full throttle on this page.
I have 2 1/4 duals w/ 12" backerwards glass packs, w/22" long 3 1/2" wide chrome tips, going straight out the back.
For alittle less poping, and more/better mileage, put 2.5" pipe with some small normal mufflers(glass packs would still be good, just get longer for quiter), and joint the two pipes about half way down with a H or X pipe.
It helps reduce backpressure, and supposedly gives alittle extra power because of this.
If I would put pipe on another 2wd, I'd run 2 1/4 - 2.5" pipe w/12" glass packs, and a H or X pipe, w/ same tips.
I have a 351C with stock manifolds and 2 1/4" duals exiting behind each rear wheel.I started with glasspack mufflers and they sounded deep and throaty------for a while. After a few years they got tooooo loud so I put Super Trapps on the ends of the tailpipes and they sound really good. They are mellow and deep enough to sound more powerful than the truck is.

If it's just being used as a "truck", and the motor is not modded or reved high, 1-3/4-1-7/8 exhaust with turbo mufflers will be more than enough. If the motor is modded or reved, you may want to go with 2 inch. No need to run these fancy mufflers that cost big $$$. It's all opinion though, sort of.
Stock 302-2V, 3 spd manual and I'm running stock exhaust manifolds that mate to 2.5" pipes to Flowmaster 40 series mufflers with stock exit (45 degrees out behind rear wheels). Yes, it's overkill for the engine but it sounds so damn good.
I always run minimum 2 1/4" pipe on anything. It doesn't hurt and it sounds a lot better. Most shops can work with 2 1/2" mowadays, unlike years ago when 2 1/4 was big for the corner shop and 2 1/2 will give you room for performance upgrades in the future.
2 1/4" minimum for stock truck. This will allow the engine to breath, and also build plenty of backpressure. If you're keeping the truck for a while, cheap turbo mufflers won't last very long. If your budget allows, purchase the "fancy" mullers (Flowmaster, Borla ect...), they will last many years.

I was planning on running dual pipes, to dual flowmasters, but i was also thinking about having them exit out of the same side though, so i dunno if i should get a muffler with dual in/outlets or two seperate mufflers.
I beleive 2 seperate muffleres would give you better flow but try calling flowmaster thy could help ou the best. Try the number on this page http://www.flowpowerexhaust.com/exhaust_system~flowmaster.html i beleive its the right one or try searching for it. Ive talked to the tecks before very helpful. I have the 40 series mufflers on my truck would show you pics but havent taken any yet
Yes I was talking about flow velocity. Back pressure and velocity are directly related. I found a link that will help you choose an exhaust system based on engine size and rpm http://www.performanceexhaust.com/facts.htm
