I'm trying to pull this lever off, cuz I need the one off my 360 auto. to go onto the 460 auto. that is now in my truck.
I have removed the nut and the kickdown lever came right off, but the shift lever seems to be pressed on. There is a ridge to get some kind of puller on, but my generic ones just slip off.
Is a special Ford tool needed?
Thanks in advance,
Rod
the way i have changed them is to drop the pan and valve body. take the nut off the other end of lever inside trans and the lever slides out of case. dont think the lever is supposed to come off shaft.
Bronco buster if right, you need to exchange levers and rods since the shift lever is not meant to be removed from the rod. I just did this conversion in my ’71 F-350. I replaced a 390 with a 400M which has the same C6 as the 460.
You need to remove the valve body as a whole, without separating both halves. There are two sizes of bolts on the valve body. The smaller ones attach the upper and lower valve bodies together whereas the larger, 3/8”, bolts attach the entire valve body to the trans. If you separate the valve body then you will have springs and check ***** to replace.
Practice on the 390 trans because it’s out of the truck and also if you make any mistakes you want them to be there.
Thanks Everyone!
I was able to swap the shift levers by dropping that valve body then unscrewing that 7/8" nut.
Besides the external levers being a different shape they were exactly 180 deg. from each other, which made the old one go in at just the right angle. I was also amazed that the shift rod will only need about a 1/8" adjustment to fit right into the lever!
I'm almost done with my Lincoln 460/C6 into a 1970 F250 swap and will be posting a summary soon!
